Hi Wazurians,
Need some advice here;
I have been offered a Toyota Carib whose specs are;
YoM 1999.
local Reg KAY.
Looks very clean.
Asking 550K.

Want to know - how are Caribs generally in terms of perfomance, spares availability and cost.
Is their resale value good.
Is the price a bargain or am I loosing out.

How does this '99 carib look? Is it 'flatback'?

Basics:

Carib (Toyota Sprinter Caribbean) produced for Japanese market = Toyota Corolla 4WD or something (eg in Autralia)

...hence it behaves like a corolla and should require similar parts to corolla.

Pricewise.... I have no idea. Corolla should command better prices coz of the name.

I could be wrong.

I'm sure there some here who have owned/driven & should be able to give a better view.

IDP,

Damn!!!.....Why not??It may be in mint condition.......what matters is how the car has been used.I know of a lady who has a car she bought in late 2008.....I have no doubt she uses it to plough her farm and those of her neighbours.

@Nandwa,
If you value your money,take the car to AA and let them do a valuation.They will give you a value very close to the worth of the car......but that should set you back kindu 6K.
Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm.

Wazuarians who drive caribs please give some insights.

Just looked at the cars papers its actually year 2000 as date of first reg in Japan. Got here in 2007.
Looks quite likeable.
Noticed its a Sprinter Carib Toyota. Kwani are there Corrola Caribs - thats confusing.

How much would a newly imported Carib range in the Market.

@JkMwatha

It's a bulging back more like G.Touring. with a neat boot knob for ease of pulling it open.

More on the Carib and the various editions available:

http://www.cars-director.../sprinter_carib/1999_4/

I would dare say that the number plate should be the second consideration, after the level of maintenance of the car, so probably have a mech check out the KAY, and also give @Dudette a call :)

Hi Wazuans,

hope nandwa will find this post useful although a bit late.
I have a 1999 Toyota carib z touring that i imported from japan. It cost me 680k including port charges then- 2007.i have used it without any issues for the past 3 years and 2 months.
all i do is regular service- oil, airfilter, spark plugs, fuel filter, brake pads. the only other major thing i have changed are front shocks and the tyres- expected after 3 years.

what i can assure you is they are very reliable cars, shares most of its spares with the premio and regular corollas. actually the engine on the carib is the 7A engine you find in the premio.that gives it quite some punch if above 1800cc.most are full time 4WD which is good if you pass muddy roads sometimes.

city consumption for me 10km/lt, highway 15km/lt. my transmission is manual. Go by the service history and how the car has been kept more than looking at mileage or registration as they can be very misleading. then have a reputable company like Auto assured do a thorough valuation- it will cost you 4k( worth it).

i valued mine i week ago for insurance purposes and valuation came to 580k after 3 years on the road. thats one good thing with toyotas- resale value.
