I am planning a trip to Dar in about two months.

I need to get decent accommodation on a tight budget...something like our 680 / Marble Arch etc. Needs to be in CBD or near enough [like silver springs]

Should have decent conference room to hold meetings with client groups.

Anyone who's been there; please help

Mukiha, I fly to Dar every now and then. KQ/ Precision Air will set u back abt USD 492 return. I hope u get the Boeing 737-300 jet as the Precision Air turbo-props are noisy and take 45 minutes more than the jet.
Here are some of the hotels my pals and I have experience in, prices are ish ish as at the last time I visited in Q4 2009 and early Q1 2010.

Tansoma - decent, good and overlooks CBD. USD 70 USD.
Plse try their kuku wa kupaka while there! Mob Kenyans
passby this hotel. Has free gym, conference facilities too.

Harbour View - USD 100. In CBD.

New Africa Hotel - bang in the CBD. Kinda upper middle class. $ 150
Kempinski - in city center, high-class. but very very expe. Admire
but don't enter!! USD 185/=

Double Tree by Hilton - 20m drive to/from CBD, Hilton-maintained standards. USD 150 p.p.p.d. Have a lighted bridge to jetty,
nice.very nice.

Recommend Tansoma for ur purposes.

If going by road, don't use Mohd Enterprises (or sth like that), they had troublesome buses that kept on breaking despite being changed!
Also get a yellow fever jab as immigration will definitely ask for this at Julius Nyerere Int Airport. You can get an int. cert and vaccination professionally done in 10 min flat at City Hall at 1,800/=

Good luck

Stayed at the Peacock five years ago. Then it was a small budget hotel. Clean, good service. Haven't been to Dar since, so I can't say anything about it now.

Thanks Intelligentsia; I'm told there is also another place called "Uplands Centre" near the University of Dar. Do you know about it?

@Gordon Gekko: I Googled peacock and it looks goo enough. Conference package @ $30 seems fine. They now have two facilities - City Centre and Millenium. I guess you were at the City Centre

Has anyone else been there recently?

@Mukiha, pole I don't know "Uplands Centre" near the University of Dar although is sounds on the way to Ubungo where buses from Nairobi terminate their journey. I also have tried calling a friend in Tz to inquire about the place but am nt getting through - will keep trying and alert you as soon as I have a response.

@mukiha, at that time there was only one Peacock, the one outside CBD opposite an open field used for football matches (grabbed now?) I am surprised the price is US$30, I paid US$ 33 in 2004!! Or has the Tsh depreciated so they now earn more Tsh?

I'll second Peacock - US$ 70-80. The one I have stayed at a couple of times is on Bibi Titi Mohammed Road....
