sad, I have always heard that name mentioned - but I thought Wilkinson was like the biggest star ever in rugby - ama ni shida ya kusoma british press sana.

nope Jonah Lomu was a star in his own right - he was not just a new zealand star but rather a worldwide star. Even people who didn't care about rugby got to know about him in his hey days. I don't really remember any other rugby player who broke off as he did! Wilkinson was a star but he really didn't inspire the kind of fever Lomu did when he was playing... and it seems I am not alone in looking at him this way look at this Rugby's first global superstar, a special talent who captured the imagination of fans across the world. In my opinion in order to be a global superstar you need to do things that people who don't understand the rules of the game get impressed by! Drop kicks and conversions only impress ardent fans (sorry Wilkinson), steals and turnovers as well (Sorry Richie MAKAU Laughing out loudly Laughing out loudly Laughing out loudly Laughing out loudly ).

Forgive my ignorance for this game, but it looks like Lomu was a very strong guy, those guys in white (I am assuming they must be Britons) seem to have a hard time bringing him down.

Now if you got like 4 or 5 sumo wrestlers kind of guys, one holds the ball, the others protect him and they start walking towards the other end to score a try, I am sure tackling them would be next to impossible - would that like work. smile

Rugby world cup semi final 1995. One of the greatest rugby matches ever played. New Zealand 45, England 29. Jonah Lomu 4 beautiful tries. He ran through England, he was unstoppable..... a great pleasure to watch.

RIP Big Man.... Thanks for all the joy you gave us watching you!

His most iconic moment was when he ran over Will Carling who was England captain at the time.

one always got excited when he touched the ball.... you expected something special to come out of it. I remember the Sunday Nation did a piece on him in the 90s. The then 6 ft 5in 120kgs 20 year old said mentioned that he ate Some roots called Taro and aspiring rugby players like me wondered where we could get some of that! RIP big boy... RIP!

Legendary springbok scrum half Joost Van Der Westhuizen has also passed on today. One of the most memorable moments of RWC 1995 was watching braveness of Joost tackling the rampaging Lomu who outweighed him by 25 kilograms . This was after Lomu had run over England several times in the semis.
