As it has been discussed here, our bankers are thieves....

Please lend me your time for a moment, especially if you walk around with your ATM card.

I lost mine on the night of Tuesday October 20 and there is something weird in the way I lost Sh 377,133 in five different transactions that happened in four different places in less than eight hours.

As I come to terms with that, I have decided to share my ordeal with the media. Something will come out of this, I believe.

By the way, my name is Lawrence Gatitu Mbugua. I’m an accountant based in Nyeri.

I had gone to watch Arsenal tackle Bayern Munich in a Uefa Champions’ League clash when the drama started.

I believe I was pickpocketed inside Nyeri’s Bells Pub as I enjoyed the match. I lost my wallet that had cash, my national identity card and the ATM card that is property of the Co-operative Bank.

As soon as I realised the wallet was gone, I rushed to the nearest Co-operative branch where I met a night shift guard by the name Evans Nyandika.

He was kind enough to give me his phone, with which I called the bank and asked them to block any transactions. That was about 1am.

Assured that things were under control, I headed home.

Shock confronted me the next morning when I got my bank statement. It was printed on Wednesday 9.01am and it told a grim story.

WITHDRAWALS AND SPENDINGS

Sh 40,000 was withdrawn from an ATM in Nyeri, then later Sh 36,645 spent at an outlet that is entered in the statement as “Tusker Mattresses Thika” that is in “Nairobi Kenya”.

Then there was another spending of Sh 82,995 at an outlet listed as “Tuskys Chania Till 19” that is in “Thika Kenya”. Strangely, this one was entered as a double transaction, meaning Sh 165,990 was spent in that transaction.

That was not all.

Another Sh 40,000 was withdrawn from an ATM at Tom Mboya in Nairobi before a final expenditure of Sh 94,498 was incurred at an outlet listed as “Fone Xpress Prestige” in Nairobi.

I was then assured by the bank that the account was now totally blocked and no other transaction would take place.

The statement doesn’t show the times the withdrawals happened and one question disturbs me: could those transactions have happened at night?

I recorded a statement at the Nyeri police station that Wednesday, and so did the guard who helped me out.

I have also visited my bank and the involved retailers to get an explanation over the matter. But I am still at a loss.

A Tuskys official told me on Thursday that they do not have till number 19 at their Thika branch; that they have only 12 tills.

The bank insists that it should have been my responsibility to safeguard the PIN number of my ATM, which I agree with. But I am ready to shout from any rooftop that my PIN wasn’t anywhere on my wallet.

My greatest worry is that some transactions could have happened even after the Co-op bank representative assured me by phone that my account was blocked. Or my card could have been hacked into.

As I try to put together the pieces of this jigsaw, a brief message from me: be careful, guys.

That story has so many gaps its not believable. For a start, card skimming is out of question with the chip cards. Secondly, every card transaction nowadays must be validated with a PIN. So his PIN was used by someone else.

Thirdly, which tuskys supermarket operates 24 hours ? Fourth, the bank can give him a card history including attempts that were not successful with exact time to the second.

Seems like our friend aliwekewa mchele and gave out his card with pin. Or his mwk took the card and he needed a story to convince wife. Luckily for him, the bank cannot explain itself to the public since those are confidential details.

All those transactions cannot go through without PIN. Then thought supermarkets have cameras? Further, so how do we conclude bankers are thieves from the episode?

If what is written is true then tha'ts an inside job, but a shoddy one at that and done by a greedy guy.

But assume that happened to one, what steps can one take, can't afford to sue the bank, the cops can not afford to prosecute the bank for such

You may not have read the whole article, but the man says, he rushed to CO-OP and reported the loss of ATM. He was assured that all was well

"I called the bank and asked them to block any transactions. That was about 1am.

Assured that things were under control, I headed home."

So it is most probable that after cancelling the ATM, someone re-activated it ofcourse setting the PIN and carrying out the transaction...Cyber criminals are real.

You can hack and draw money from any card but once it's blocked you need an inside man to reactivate it or hack the banking system. I don't think the banking system was hacked coz the damage would have been bigger.

Sounds very odd.
You CANNOT use a ATM / Debit card on a ATM or shop till without a pin - period.
On a side note, I had a BIG problem with my credit card in South Africa.
This was before chip cards were introduced.
I was charged about 800K in a few days. Fortunately my bank reversed the entries.
A few points to note for your safety:

- Black out the last 3 digits on the back of your card. This is called the CVV number. If someone is using your card for online shopping, they don't need the PIN - CVV will do.
- Use a bank that immediately sends you an SMS for ALL transactions. This way you know when the card is used by you, and more importantly by someone else.
If your story is correct, your "wrong" transactions should be reversed.

Really?? I think they do have time entries.

My view is that this issue must be taken to its logical conclusion to either call out on this "JuliusNjogu" or the bank and its security measures.

Interesting.
The story above has many gaps but Co-op may not be 100% spotless. In 2012 my mum's handbag was stolen while in traffic in Ngara on a Friday at about noon. Unfortunately she had her PIN in some notebook in the same bag,so clearly she was messed up. At least for about 72 hours till Monday.
However,we went straight to Central police got abstracts and headed to University way branch to ask that her card be blocked. Some lady keenly noted her details but later asked that she reports to her branch(Kitale)
I don't think they blocked that card immediately. She travelled the same day and next day reported to her branch - and it was 'blocked'.
The interesting thing is that when she rechecked with her branch on Tuesday, she was informed that widthdrawals still took place upto Monday! They just took her round in circles after that with regards to the Monday withdrawal. She just took what was left and parted ways with the bank.
As much you can dismiss the story above, I for one will advice people to NEVER trust Co-op Bank staff especially with information on lost ATM cards. If possible,I rush to my branch and withdraw the whole loot on the counter.
