Kwale Sugar to launch branded retail products from 2016. Recently opened Kwale International Sugar Company Limited (KISCOL) will start packaging its sugar in smaller packets (2kg and below) from 2016. Currently, the company is selling its products in 50kg bags. Developed in partnership with Mauritian sugar producer Omnicane Limited (25% stake), KISCOL incorporates a nucleus estate of 5,500 hectares of cultivated cane; a 3000 tonnes- crushed-per-day sugar mill; an 18 megawatt bagasse-fired power plant and a sophisticated irrigation and water management system (sub-surface drip-feed irrigation) for about half of the current nucleus estate. Sale of power(10MW) to the grid will commence after an ongoing evacuation line is completed (neighboring KISCOL, is Base Titanium - an Australian mining firm involved in mining heavy minerals, where the power could be sold).

KISCOL will provide affordable, locally grown sugar which will not require the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) duty protection for survival. Kenya’s local industry yields an average of 63 t/Ha with maturity at 18-24 months (rain fed). For KISCOL, the maturity will be within 12 months and yields are at 110 t/Ha (irrigated). Recovery rate of sugar for KISCOL and the rest of Kenya’s sugar industry is similar at around 10%. KISCOL is owned by family run investment group, Pabari Investments Limited, which has a presence across several industry sectors including agribusiness, pharmaceuticals, transport, petroleum, medical care, education and IT. For the bulk of sugar industry based in western Kenya to survive, it is clear that key focus will have to be on agriculture development to ensure the yields and maturity periods can be improved drastically. This will enable companies such as Mumias Sugar to compete effectively. (KISCOL, Standard Investment Bank)

It's good to see Mumias sugar on the shelves. What's interesting is that KISCOL can compete WITHOUT the COMESA safeguards. Imagine the profits KISCOL makes under the current regime if they can compete with duty free sugar from COMESA!

People believe that Mumias only produces the branded packets. They are wrong. The bales i.e branded packets are only a small proportion and their market is mostly supermarkets. Majority of Mumias sugar is packaged in 50kg sacks. You can check with wholesalers like YH, Maarufu, New Nyanza, Kanini Haraka etc to confirm.

Never count on making a good sale. Have the purchase price be so attractive that even a mediocre sale gives good returns.

1.35 to me is the minimum this share may sink. At that point I will be jumping in without thinking as it is a gain even if they decide to delist from the market or be bought out by an investor.

Mumias is worth 80cts. Think of the debts Mumias owes banks and others.
