If you can get through @muandiwambeu's post, you will see what is said makes a lot of sense. Utilities are cash-hungry entities and there's little room from (interesting) dividends.

The reason utilities need/want strategic & cash-rich investors with a long-term horizon is that there is a constant need for investment in a growing economy to feed the demand. The investment needed TODAY are huge since these projects have 20/30/50 year lives not the 'get-rick-quick' projects Kenyans prefer.

The returns for these utilities (think annuities) come over a much longer period after a long period of waiting for the investment to mature. These investments have to weather the weather, political landscape, public ire, tax regime changes, etc.

As long as there is a pending rights issue, no good news will be taken positively with the controlling stake by GoK. Old timers have learned the hard way to avoid such profit manipulation gimmicks orchestrated by managers of Public Enterprises. The government is NEVER a good business partner. NEVER

Applause Applause Applause Except for KenRe, I have kept away from GoK controlled/influenced firms including KQ, NBK, EAPCC, Uchumi, etc. I got burnt on KCB (during the first Rights Issue) & then kept away to my dismay.

Tanzania will switch off all hydropower plants because of low water levels that have seen electricity generation reduce by 80 per cent, the government said Thursday.

Tanzanians will now have to grapple with debilitating power crisis but the government said it will turn on some gas plants in the next two weeks.

The country's current power consumption is 870 megawatts but production capacity recorded as of Wednesday stood at 105 megawatts. The capacity can go up to 135 Megawatts when some generators are switched on.

Good news for KenGen and KPLC ... They can crank up their thermal generation to supply TZ. The thermal generation units incur a capacity charge whether they are used or not so it makes more sense to have them running and producing power.

Note that power produced by these thermal generators is pricier than most other sources and TZ should pay KPLC/KenGen the marginal cost of production + a profit.

Tanzania's switch off of hydro power is to allow gas power plants to be connected to the grid (350 MW). Lindi/Mtwara gas has been piped to Dar(Ubungo) and the gas plants have been coming on step by step. Oct 20th all gas power plants will be fired up. The crisis is almost over and TZ will have stable power thanks to gas discovery in Lindi/Mtwara

No interconnection of note between TZ & KE grids so Kenya Power cannot supply power to TZ.

Just 870MW, wow that is so little while South Africa with the same population demands 34,000MW

The article said there's little water in the dams.

350MW vs a demand of 870MW. Do the maths!!!
Never count on making a good sale. Have the purchase price be so attractive that even a mediocre sale gives good returns.
