The KNBS report is based on the wages of
employees who pay income tax to the Kenya
Revenue Authority (KRA).
Kenya had a total of 2,370,184 formal sector
workers last year, growing by 300,000 in the past
four years.

Out of 2.3M formal workers, the percentage of those earning >100K has gone up to 2.89% or 68,676 Kenyans. Still the number of mortgage accounts in the entire country is under 20,000.

The sobering reality. Forget the posturing of GES Summit members and Instagrammers flossing around. Kenya is a dirt poor 3rd world country.

Even with entrepreneurs, it's a vicious cycle where most SME businesses in Kenya don't make enough to pay employees well due to small market size with disposable income. And the few corporates we have can only pay the managers well as they chase super profits to appease harsh investors. How will we ever get out of the cycle?

That is definitely in formal employment some of whom still have undeclared side hassles!!! Jua kali hassles, am sure the number would almost be approaching 1m - where bulk of money circulate in the economy (gut feeling observation)!!!!

This means its better to be a businessperson since im sure there are very many people in biashara whos net income exceeds 100k monthly

That's around 33$ per day. The hard working and lucky fundi from Kibera and c. earns around 5$ per day.Rent is 0.7$ per day - what I made the whole day yesterday! Food on average is 3$ per day, transport 2$ ...

Poverty levels are grossly misrepresented, and the global financial system is a scam.

Definitely the formal sector which according to This article by Christine Mungai maybe less than 20% of the population in Kenya.

Very poor observation. There cannot be 20x more entrepreneurs than employees in Kenya. In any economy the plain employees are the majority. Plain employment is the route most take in life. Also, those people with good side hustles tend to be the ones with high salaries that give them the capital.

Personally I think if you added up all the entrepreneurs, side hustlers, expats farmers etc into that equation, there would still be no more than 2-3 hundred thousand people making over 100k. Face facts, we are one of the poorest and most corrupt countries in the world
