Is the present use of 'soft power' less brutish? Is controlling another person's psychology using invisible or intangible techniques better than decapitation?

It don't matter what anybody thinks about you, the only thing that matters is what you think about yourself. Everything else is secondary. If you have good self esteem, you won't care about what people think about you or even how they perceive you. That's their problem. But then religion is full of bigots who harbor hate even amongst themselves. You will never see this type of hate coming from an atheist because we value humanity and we believe in equality amongst humans of all races. That's why we don't kill in the name of a god. I've never understood the hold that religion has on it's people. It's a very sad affair.

'Religious people' is an expression being used carelessly. It's a whole continuum of personalities and ideas. Same for 'atheist'. But I notice that some here will twist logic perhaps to reinforce their own agendas. It's difficult for any person to love his neighbor as himself. Not all who say 'Lord, lord' will inherit the Kingdom of heaven. Goodness comes even at the cost of suffering and why would one choose to suffer for another?
