@Muganda, I still haven't found the book. Have bn to two bookshops and they don't have it. I'm very keen on reading it though.

Ooops! late to the party today - what a day... Now now, all is forgiven so full steam ahead.

@gathinga, please join the party
@Jacy26, picked up the book at Text Book Centre. Also try Prestige in town or BookPoint
@Leona, understood
@kissedxx, @murren, @Zakumi, @tony stark Woooyeeee; me I just see you discussing politics tu

So we need to decide, should we make a new pick then we all start or do you want us to wait and you pick up the same book?

Mine Boy
Characters

Daddy: the abbreviation ROTFLOL must have been formed with him in mind.I can imagine him enjoying one more fight in Malay camp rolling around on the ground as some goons square it off.

Eliza: personification of a young Kenyan lady between the ages of 25 and 35. doesn't know whether she wants a "man" or a "MAN".

An excerpt of Daddy ROTF
"On the ground were two coloured women. They were locked in battle. And the crowds were making bets as to who would win. Most of them favoured the thin dark woman who looked like an Indian. Lena they called her. The fat pale one they called Drunk Liz and they didn’t seem to like.
The fat one was on top, sitting on the chest of the little one. But the little one had her by the hair and was pulling. And tears were flowing from the fat one’s eyes and her neck was pulled backward by the straining tug at her long brown hair.
Pull! Pull them out, Lena’ Daddy shouted, and rolled into the gutter with excitement.
The little one pulled. The fat one loosened her grip on the little one’s throat and fell back. As she tumbled over her dress went up and her pale flesh showed.
Xuma turned his eyes away.
The crowd roared. Daddy lay cackling in the gutter and kicking his feet in the air.
Tears streamed from his eyes.

……..Daddy could not contain himself and rubbed his head against the pavement. Again the crowd roared."

Now that is what i call word play.

My favorite paragraph in the whole book is the beginning of chapter 4

@bkismat, interesting tit-bits. How far are you in the book and what's your basis for choosing it? Wondering whether I should jump into your band-wagon.

Also it may be better to start a thread with the book title, for posterity and so we can chew together if I catch up... smile

@ muganda. finally somebody has taken interest. no basis whatsoever for choosing it I just like the book even though its very brutal. i can just take it and just start reading it from any page just like some people can watch their favorite movie over and over.

@muganda why dont you choose a business autobiography like njenga karumes? or something more pulsating like dan browns lost symbol..
some of these african writers remind of high sch and bore me stiff
I may be wrong..but then I could be right

@bkismat interesting... what say you we begin sequentially on @digitek1's choice of Charcoal to Gold by Njenga Karume?

I only suggest as much since you seem to have almost completed your book and we can move together. Since it's a Kenyan story, it would be easy to relate. Reviews have been positive...

@digitek, realise though that it's still an African writer and the idea is to discover good reads, hence why we should be judicious in our choices.

@bkismat..no need for that..Karume is a african too you know...
I have nothing against mineboy, a walk in the night, beautiful ones, concubine, no longer at ease ...etc ONLY that i had enough of them in high sch...some are also kinda colonial and dated

@Muganda Charcoal to gold ...all systems are a go
I may be wrong..but then I could be right

@digitek1, appreciate your patience. I let the post simmer to see if we got more takers. All welcome of course - let's review a Kenyan 'boy'.

@leona and I will get our copies and hopefully we can exchange some ideas, on a separate thread, later in the week.

Of course, this would only give @bkismat time to complete Mine Boy and the two Adichie books smile Then we can link up on the next one.
