@mukiha - Buying into safcom @ 5.35 was less logic then it was speculation... LOL... I might regret it... I was holding out for 5/- coz I think a good buy at 5/- (7% less than my buy-in price)

@VVS i think i'll hold on to my safcom holdings until the announcement.. i'm expecting a MINIMUM of 50% profit growth... anything less i'm bailing out BIG TIME!!!

So many choices... the results for Kenyan listed firms are pretty good considering the issues/problems in 2009...

I expect Safaricom will do much better in data & M-Pesa in 2010 though seems voice is steady at best...

Playing the market.....very interesting indeed.
Trading in a recovering market requires one to be satisfied with their gains at times...i.e tame greed.Timing the market can be costly, I may regret taking a 'smaller profit' but at least i have it...
In the past few weeks...'spread selling' has saved me some blushes since some counters just keep going up especially the agriculturals.
Just when you sell, the price moves u again.
I have however decided to hold on for now except where my gains are 100% plus or where earlier set targets have been met whichever comes first...and with the accrued profits from agriculturals...i'm really ogling at KQ...speculation play continues...

Stockmaster, you are not sticking to your new years resolution "playing the market" deal or?, i mean agriculturals and banks were the way to go but you stuck with safcom. Jump Jump around we see how it works. Take the risks and move.

@all, safaricom pretax profit for FY2008 was 15.3B which was 23% down from the previous year. For FY2009, some sources have hinted at a 14B pretax profit which is 8% down compared whith FY2008. What new info will make this stock jump? Who will buy it at a higher price e.g 6bob? Even the foreign investors are going slow on it. Maybe i'm missing some info...

@jaguar - The real jump for safcom is in 2010-11 as the data business jumps (so many modems flew out the door in mid-late 2009)... and as M-Pesa transactions exploded...

BTW, safcom get a small percentage of M-Pesa tho not sure what it is...

you are right vvs, hence its unlikely to touch new highs this year till they announce there 1st half results in november 2010. Concerning the modems, don't forget safcom is the most expensive hence many of those modems are now working with simcards from their competitors. If they need to make money from the masses, they will have to lower their internet charges

I wait to see how they will get people to sign-up on their expensive data service...the way they did with their voice service .... at double the fee and half the reliability!!

i'm getting very fatigued with safcom share price sticking to its current range... i think many other investors also are..

at this rate if the results do not surprise gratly to the upside then i expect there to be a massive sell off...

@VVS from the looks of things i may be swallowing my words and buying you lunch in a couple of days...

The truth is Safaricom OWNS the data market in Kenya... They have the subscribers AND the reach...

I cant stand slow connections so I pay for better speeds... I am not a fan of Orange 3G+ (not yet)... Zain is way too slow... Have not tried YU seriously on data...

@all
after rising more than 10% in two weeks the NSE hit strong resistance at 4091 and is on its way down.. (definately Below 4000 today)

institutions came back to the market big time and drove up stock prices hard... now that they've taken their positions effective demand is gone, then in come the retail investors trying to sell their stocks looking for a quick buck...

they are the ones driving the market down but this represents a clear buying oppurtunity for those who missed the first run because be sure that the institutions are not yet finished with the NSE...

Kshs 550,000 to invest..identiying 5 counters only..buying in lots of 10k per counter every week...regardless of price...on week 11 to 15..chill out on week 16..turnover the 5 counter portfolio..take in profit if need be.. start over again...

Any thing wrong with this picture?

Criteria..still workin on one..probably Low PSR,High ROE..liquid counter (for quick exit)..NOT SPECULATING..just a ver small long-tem window!smile
