NAIROBI, March 11 (Reuters) - National Bank of Kenya (NBK.NR: Quote, Profile, Research) said on Thursday its pretax profit in 2009 rose to 2.16 billion shillings ($28.1 million) and that it would issue bonus shares rather than resuming dividend payments.

National Bank has attracted attention lately because the government is selling its shares in the 10th largest bank by assets in east Africa's biggest economy.

"Total assets have gone up from 42.69 billion shillings to 51.04 billion shillings," Managing Director Reuben Marambii said, referring to the year under review.

The bank suffered huge losses in the first half of the last decade, largely due to bad debts taken by politicians and their associates. It has not paid a dividend in recent years, despite consistent profit growth, as it covered the losses.

"We have not been expanding these last few years. We were simply consolidating ... we have been left behind by quite a few banks. Now we want to catch up," he said.

"We are not going to pay a dividend ... The directors are pleased to recommend, subject to approval, a bonus issue in the proportion of 2 new ordinary shares for every 5 ordinary shares held," he told an investor briefing. (Reporting by Richard Lough; Editing by Duncan Miriri)

Good job NBK, I prefer scrip to cash dividends. It keeps cash in the organisation and raises the NAV. And if you need cash you can always sell a few shares. Well done, though I don't have any holding in NBK

The utimate goal of investing is to buy low sell high;if we re-write this core equation in psychology terms it becomes buy fear sell greed.

Guys i stand to be corrected that CMA/NSE rules are such that no counter can appreciate beyond 10% of its value on a single trading day?
Then while there is excitement on the bonus issue in relation to the NBK counter i believe there is more than meets the eye and this issue should be inquired into.

@masaibu, the 10% rule is waived on the day there is a material e.g end year results, books closure etc. NBK can even rise 100% today if there is anyone willing to pay.
DAMN!!!!! This one caught me unawares! 2:5 bonus translates to 40% gain after books closure. DAMN!!!!!!

This announcement completely blind-sided me... Good move to retain cash in the business if it can grow.

NBK will be taken over by someone or a strategic investor will come in. Too tempting a target.

Just a thought..
I have kshs500 in my wallet (i wish i'd have more), plus my ATM card. I'm young..hoping to grow my wealth over time..having an ATM says i have savings that grow over time. If i go and withdraw kshs 200 from the bank, i will have kshs700 in my wallet... Does that make me wealthier?.. Actually i'v diluted my networth by making shs200 of my savings highly liquid..i can spend it now!..plus it's friday.

NBK's bonus issue..does that increase my wealth as an investor?..NOT really...they are converting shareholder funds...equivalent to my savings into easily disposable units.. if am a long term investor..they aren't preserving my wealth..just playing my greed.

Traders only are the ones justified to be happy with this...the greater fool theory says some guy outside there will be so greedy for cash he won't mind buying the share at a price way too over valued. Alas! Alas.. no wonder the Bible condemns greed.

CONCERN THOUGH:
does the bonus apply only to the 200,000,000 ordinary share or includes the 1,135,000,000 pref shares also?

But for investors... it's just playing us.
