Absurdism

Quote:
In philosophy, "the Absurd" refers to the conflict between the human tendency to seek inherent value and meaning in life and the human inability to find any. In this context absurd does not mean "logically impossible", but rather "humanly impossible". The universe and the human mind do not each separately cause the Absurd, but rather, the Absurd arises by the contradictory nature of the two existing simultaneously.

Quote:
In absurdist philosophy, the Absurd arises out of the fundamental disharmony between the individual's search for meaning and the meaninglessness of the universe.

The Difference Between Existentialism, Nihilism, and Absurdism

Quote:

In general, there are three ways of practically dealing with the situation.

1.Suicide due to life being ultimately meaningless and therefore either too boring or too painful

2.Embracing a meaning framework such as religion or spirituality

3.Acceptance of the lack of meaning, and living on in spite of it.

Quote:
The third option is to either construct or adopt a belief structure that provides a practical reprieve from the impossibility of true meaning while never actually rejecting that the system used is itself also meaningless.

There's a fourth possibility; the universe is itself not as meaningless as humans may perceive it, and that a more powerful force directs all events and all things. And that humans need not worry because even if they did, things would still do themselves. Humans are just rationalizers.

A fifth possibility would be the universe is a vast intelligent system with many recursive and intelligent subsystems that are in sync but with varying effects for each subsystem.

I think humanity is too young in the universe to start claiming 'absurdity'.

Humans find meaning in life through revelation, creativity and reason. That's why it's projected that around 7th millennium CE human activity may be undifferentiable from what we now call 'nature'. Humans will subdue nature.

Other animals like cats and dogs have no notion of meaning. Meaning is only important to humans and can be ascribed to linguistic development and self consciousness. So meaning is something almost imposed by humans on nature. It's perceived absence can be ascribed to 'weak' linguistic structure.

I like the pessimism of Schopenhauer (i.e., suicide) as well as the life-affirming doctrine of Nietzsche in the face of the Absurd. Never felt much for the second option.
