Mwangi has formerly launched the ThinSIM today in the launch of Equitel. They say the thin sim costs Ksh 600 to manufacturer but will be offered free of charge.

I primarily use airtel, and only use Safcon for Mpesa. Should I be excited?

For free? d'oh!

If 5M users opt for the thinsim that's a cost of 3B. Who will foot that bill?

For a discount makes sense due to cost implications.

For free would only make sense with a cap. Says for the 1st 100K users to apply.

But thats 5M users that they will have potentially poached from Safaricom! What are the long term revenues they stand to gain from these 5M in the long term?

When a company is hooking you to cigarettes they do offer a lot of free samples .once nicotine gets fully installed into you system then you find yourself giving money generously to the same company that hooked you to free sample . It's free for now but once they enjoy the services that they can't do without then charges will be introduced later .that simple

Finserve CEO said thin SIM card is not free. It will come at a cost. Most likely 600 just like ATM card

Equity people are very loyal. They can even pay 2000 for the card.

1) Not all folks will opt for the Thin-SIM since many have dual-SIM phones.
2) Not all 5mn will apply for the Thin-SIM in this financial year so the cost can be spread out.
3) The cost per SIM will drop over time.
4) Just as Safaricom sold a SIM for 99/- (when Airtel used to charge 999/-) & boosted their subscriber base by millions so will Equity recoup the 3bn.

The ThinSIM can be offered free OR charge 600/- but offer a 'credit' of 600/- so Equity isn't putting up cash upfront while encouraging folks to use Equitel.

Poor move. Granted it means the 'cost' is 300/- after the credit to the customer.

The ThinSIM should be offered free OR charge 600/- but offer a 'credit' of 600/- so Equity isn't putting up cash upfront while encouraging folks to use Equitel.

If you sell it on the basis of 'free' [after rebate] then you get a better uptake. Safaricom did that with modems for 1,999/- with 2,000/- of data. One ends up using much more data than the 2,000/-...

HP sells us 'cheap' printers & then expensive ink cartridges. They make much more money on the latter than they lose on the former.

I completely agree! People love 'free' things, even though free is really expensive. Offer 'Free' stuff, hook them then create barriers to ensure they wont get out. Opportunity lost for Equity, now a Safcom person has no incentive to leave it and try Equitel. Kwani they dont have consultants advicing them? Hebu wanicontact, niwape bei ya jioni smile

I think guys are really losing the plot with this equitel thing. Probably safcom shareholders.

The biggest complaint against safcom products has been their shylock costs. Even that okoa jahazi would never be allowed in terms of its interest rates.

Last week safcom had to deal with airtel and it was still not enough.

I've used the equitel thing and no longer use mpesa. Catch me dead being fleeced again.

Today just 10 minutes ago I was asked by my bank manager to just test their ezzyloan.

mmmhh so I tested with 10k. Guess what, got it 2 minutes flat and I'm only going to pay back 200 bob. Still shylock rates but please compare to the 7.5% mshwari.

Guys, this is a game changer and woe unto the other players if they don't take it seriously.

I used to hate equity but still kept an account. Now I'm back. I prefer to borrow cheap and get fleeced less. What say you?

The 'chairman' of Equitel is an arrogant chap who will argue with anyone just coz he wants to feel important.

And all the more reason for Equitel to give out cheap/free SIMs so folks get on the bandwagon without 'thinking' about the 500/- SIM.

True Vituvingi but I bet they are depending on the current negativity on safaricom. Now couple that with the diehard equity fellows and now you have a real war coming.

The true gainer in this is airtel and the consumer.

Trust me, in that equity line, few will think that Mr. CEO is being a cheapskate. lol which he is.
