As a first timer, I highly recommend you use a consolidator, like Ecu-Line Kenya Ltd. You can contact Mr. Thomas Muange on tomm@ecunbo.eculine.net / 0722-710641. Price will be a bit higher but avoids you having to deal with the trucking and rail companies overseas. To save a wee bit, organize your own transport Mombasa – Nairobi and use a reputable freight company.

EU export: for EU exports, you’ll need export documents (to avoid junk electronics, restricted high-end computers etc. being shipped out….watch out that those fridges aren’t too old!). Depending on where your consignment is originating from, I could give you the contacts of freight companies which issue export documentation. You’ll have to pay for this and should expect to pay from around 150 EURO going on upwards depending on the number of different items being exported using HS Codes. Caution: even though the EU customs officials don’t check every consignment before it’s stuffed into the container, they could pop in at any time or check it at the port. I know of a few Kenyans who have, shall we say, tried to take advantage after shipping 3-4 containers without incident and getting caught. Penalties can and will be very VERY nasty.

Duty: contact your clearing agent whom I hope you trust as much as is possible in these things. KRA has a very unfortunate habit of deciding on the customs values of second hand goods based on the moon phases, whether s/he ate breakfast, etc. which won’t make any sense at all.

KEBS: your consignment will have to be inspected before it leaves the supplier’s premises. Note that the supplier can be you, even if you’re not resident there. Of course, this being Kenya, you can avoid the inspection and the resulting 15% of the CFR value penalty by “talking” to the KEBS guys, something I very highly discourage.

One caution: the local market is really getting quite saturated with second hand stuff from Germany / Netherlands / UK (there’s a company in the coast who bring in about 10 40ft containers to flog cheaply) with low margins. Don’t take my word. Get a reputable market research company to do an independent research before you jump in (I could give you the one I use...expensive but much cheaper than losing millions).
