Having been out of motor market for quite some years, it is frustrating to get back and buy a nice car.

Functional car (with great extras), respectable/ neck turning model, which would feel nice for 5 years, not more than 2k cc - all that under 1 m.

Ideas, ladies and gentlemen.

If importing is an option, have a look at www.autotrader.co.uk for some options. I am sure someone else will suggest other sources but where you source from is entirely up to you.

European? Japanese? All depends on your taste really.

My suggestions:

Option 1: VW Passat
Approximate duty for 2003 model: KES 396,983
Other costs (JEVIC inspection,Freight to Mombasa): £1025 - £1045

Option 2: Avensis
Approximate duty for 2ltr 2003 model: KES 375,768
Other costs (JEVIC inspection,Freight to Mombasa): £1025 - £1045

Note that if you are using a clearing agent in Kenya, they will charge for their services, though minimal. There are a few KIFWA registered ones which I can recommend though you are at liberty to appoint your own agent.

Given that the pound is low at the moment, your total cost may be slightly lower than KES 1M. **This is however subject to how much you source the car for and the prevailing exchange rate.

If buying from within Kenya - Toyota Allion or Premio (same car inside but Allion targets a younger crowd), Subaru Legacy

I'd also consider Oyster's options - they look especially reasonable.

Going by the examples given by Oyster above
duty as shown above (375,768) for the Toyota will for a vehicle 1st registered before March 2003...
..but if you went for one registered after March 2003 then the duty will jump to KES.501,024.
So it could work out cheaper to buy an earlier registration date car even if the initial value is slightly more than a post-march registered car.

JK Mwatha Howz the UK, hope you are good. How much will it cost me to land a 2003 or 2004 Audi A6, I am really impressed with this car and must bring one over ASAP

A6 depending on Model prices can vary and so can duty.
I will assume 2003 AUDI A6 1.8 T SE 4dr Multitronic Saloon (semi-auto)
good mileage.. approx 50-60k mls
Purchase price KES 775,000 (assumed)
Shipping/inspection 120,000
Duty KES 509,726.
Total 1,404,726

There's also clearing agent fees approx 50k.

Duty on the same car late 2003/early 2004 model KES 679,634.

If you go for the very basic 1.8L manual 2003 model duty falls to 447,797.

@JkMwatha, Obi 1 Kanobi and tuvok,

I have noticed that the CRSPs provided by KRA for A6 are not exhaustive, they do not cover all the models, and no diesel ones are included.

Once you identify your car, b4 you buy, I suggest you double check with your clearing agent what CRSP they will be using as you don't want to be shocked or pay wrong figure. Paying insufficient duty can incur a fine.

Your total cost will be subject to prevailing exchange rate.

Obi 1..by the way, TFL had to ask for my permission to use OYSTER...Royalties are in order.

@ JK, I didn't try the duty free stuntSickquot; thank God coz i would now be crying. I got an opportunity to return immeadiately and I did not have a car then. People advised me to buy a car and have it backdated to a year plus to avoid duty but I new better. A pal did the same thing and to date 8 months down the line, his car is still stuck at the port attracting demurrage etc.

The cost of the A6 is certainly as I expected, although I definitely want a diesel, would duty on the diesel be higher or lower.
