Swenani, I tend to think this thing is not voluntary. There is some compulsion. Why would anyone go where he is not welcome?
It is a complex problem, but indeed it is not 'voluntary.'
The conditions of economic deprivation and/or political repression are a important push factors that force people to take the risk.
The following article makes for a painful read but is quite revealing:
"If I die at sea, it's not a problem – at least I won't be tortured" They are depleting Africa of fighters and defenders.
The real paradox is Europe's myopic reaction to these modern day 'boat people.' They spend billions to keep the doors closed. Yet, with rapidly aging populations, in less than 50 years Europe will be begging for immigrants to save their economies.
By then Africa, Asia and the Middle East will have moved on.
Please allow me to call you Schupid!
Now go ahead... carry on
Sorry, I don't do gutter
Of course you are free to wallow to your hearts content. It is a free country.
Absolutely. The brotherhood does not do gutter. It has high social standards. That was a (censored) statement from pound foolish.
Yes. Their populations are aging and they foster conflict in which hundreds of thousands die creating a backlash of sorts then attempt to 'protect' themselves. Indeed, a myopic reaction.
It's untrue to insist the status quo will be, all other things being constant, in the next 100 years.
Thanks Muriel.
I find the parallels of history sometimes very illustrative.
The US, is the only developed country that is not facing the demographic disaster of an aging population. This is attributed to the large inflows of people through immigration. Much of it illegal yes, but 'foreignness' is an accepted cultural fact.
One of the biggest waves of such immigration was the so called 'boat people' forced immigrants from Indo-China that ended up on North American shores as escapees of war, economic collapse and political persecution. Parallel to the present 'boat people' of Europe.
Similar events, different reactions from the receiving nations and therefore different long term results. It seems we don't learn much from history.
