Swenani, I tend to think this thing is not voluntary. There is some compulsion. Why would anyone go where he is not welcome?

Muriel , would the illusion of safety etc not want you to cross? Besides maybe some of the people do not actually know the fate of those that go before them. "You can't have everything. Where would you put it?" - Stephen Wright

It is a complex problem, but indeed it is not 'voluntary.' The conditions of economic deprivation and/or political repression are a important push factors that force people to take the risk. The following article makes for a painful read but is quite revealing: "If I die at sea, it's not a problem β at least I won't be tortured" "The opposite of a correct statement is a false statement. But the opposite of a profound truth may well be another profound truth." (Niels Bohr)

Same reason why Kenyans fall for pyramid scams everytime....the risk seems enormous but there is a perception that if one gets worth the reward, it will be totally worth it. IF... Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee. - Muhammad Aliπ

The real paradox is Europe's myopic reaction to these modern day 'boat people.' They spend billions to keep the doors closed. Yet, with rapidly aging populations, in less than 50 years Europe will be begging for immigrants to save their economies. By then Africa, Asia and the Middle East will have moved on.
