Swenani, I tend to think this thing is not voluntary. There is some compulsion. Why would anyone go where he is not welcome?

It is a complex problem, but indeed it is not 'voluntary.' The conditions of economic deprivation and/or political repression are a important push factors that force people to take the risk. The following article makes for a painful read but is quite revealing:

Muriel , would the illusion of safety etc not want you to cross? Besides maybe some of the people do not actually know the fate of those that go before them. I know not of others from other continents, but the African needs to stop boarding ships to other continents.
