This tax is much lower than the Zakat paid by the Muslims. So its payment gave non-Muslims equal citizenship rights with the Muslims besides exempting them from other responsibilities yet they practice their religion in peace. Payment of tax is a symbol of accepting to live under Islamic law; but they are free to practice their religion. This is the same as the taxes all Kenyans or Americans for example have to pay, whether Muslim or whatever. But people still practice their religion freely.
