Google’s BebaPay cards have been withdrawn from the market, marking the death of Kenya’s pioneer commuter card aimed at streamlining the chaotic matatu sector.

Cant equity continue with the product alone. Google quitting should not kill the product unless equity wants to replace the card with NFC payments via Equitell

They say, "Do not waste your stones on Monkeys while Chimps are still coming"
Equity has seen the wraggles are a waste of time as the matatus still make deposits with them daily and thereby the transactions being done give them good tidings still.
The best place to invest in such a system is Kenya railways where tapping loaded cards on a machine to open a gate which means you follow on one customer(KR)

(1/2)Dear customer, the BebaPay service will be discontinued on 15 March 2015. You can either replace your card with the new Equity prepaid MasterCard for free,

That's part of the message I got from Bebapay. The other option was using up my balance or getting a refund end March

bebapay had issued 700,000 cards???

These guys should use one platform for cards which can be used across all routes

Equity still very much involved!

If that card was available for use across most platforms like the NakuCard they would have reaped big, but limiting it to Matatus only was their undoing. How was the partnership between Google and Equity drafted? I would have wished to know the details.

EQUITY Bank chief executive officer James Mwangi has said they are holding Sh22 million of unclaimed money in the defunct BebaPay accounts.

He said many BebaPay users are yet to claim refunds for their money even after the termination of the swipe payment service last month.

“So far we have Sh22 million of unclaimed money. As the custodian, you can reclaim whatever balance that was in your BebaPay account,” he said during the bank's annual general meeting held recently.

My friend who owns a bus says he processes less than 500 per day with those cards. It solves no problem whatsoever. Why not just require matatus to have a paybill number? Those cards were just gava contract shenanigans. Probably some connected guy ate big time on the card printing or something
