I was expecting these guys to ask "developed" questions considering that they come from developed countries

Also really dissapointed. Unless something went on behind the scenes... Otherwise it was another one of those PR GIMMICKS that we have become accustomed to from Jubilee.

How can you be disappointed and you have not stated your expectations. I thought that was the objective of the session, to meet and ask questions.

Use the money to invest on local entrepreneurs, most Kenyans in diaspora don't have the kind of money that would warrent a chat over golf. Golf kind of recruiting is for targeted investors i.e, you know so and so has ~x Billion Kshs and want to invest in X industry so you take them golfing as you show them why it's cool to invest in Kenya and not Uganda.
To me this is PR gimmick!

How do quality of questions turn to disappointment with jubilee (pr gimmicks) - I thought that would have been due to the answers given, shouldn't the disappointment been towards the diaspora jamas.smile

Because I could have been part of the group if I wanted to, meaning I could have signed up even if I am as broke as you're.

I thought they have the uwezo fund for the local young entrepreneurs.
I think the diaspora guys contribute to the economy and for that sioni shida with them being recognized and avenues being created for the same to increase their contribution.

Some of the diaspora guys had funny questions, but I am assuming much of the action happens away from the presidential question answer session, I thnk thats why Shem Ochuodho asked for a meeting with the president.

You are broke that's why you were no where near Windsor. Those who were in attendance were not of your caliber. Even S.Sudan ni diaspora

The Investment Conference ' A shadow of expectations'

Great Content ‘Wrong Audience’

The program’s committee prepared a content rich program with expert speakers sourced from the industry, however the audience was wanting’ judging from the Q& A interactive session with the president’

The ‘pre-selected’ Diaspora Representatives in the Q&A, showed lack of depth in expressing the needs of the Diaspora.  Instead of proffering tangible issues the said reps insisted on flimsies such questions on Marriage/marriage certificates, recognition of pastors, social media policy and awkward statements praising the opportunity to be allowed to vote so they ‘can vote for President Kenyatta’ were raised.

A notable contribution was made by Dr. Mutua a Kenyan living in Japan whose address on behalf of the diaspora was able to capture key issues of concern to the Diaspora.  He commended the President on his work so far and the recent commitment to fight corruption and spoke of the desire by Kenyans to participate in the electoral process during the next general elections.

The sponsors mostly from the financial institutions too were concerned that the high net worth individuals from the Diaspora with capabilities of pulling together resources to  INVEST  were not represented.

The content of the 2 day program was rich on paper, but ......

JKMwatha as is expected in such talks, I want to thank the gov't of Kenya for offering this platform.

That's it.

If you say that the content was great provided by the gov't but the participants were weak its like saying security inaanza na wewe.

Conferences are not made for political appointees with their crazy policy statements. They are made for the participants.

If the participants were bored, don't blame them. It shows that there's a disconnect with what the gov't wants and what the diasporans want.

First, the so called diasporans had no clue this was going on. Advertising in the Daily Nation does not reach the diasporan. You say "pre-selected" representatives. Who selected them? Blame the pre-selectors.

I met with many Diasporans now living in Kenya and some that were on holiday. Very many. We know what lacked in this. In fact, there's a move to create one such conference in which the gov't is invited but not allowed to draw the agenda.

Sponsors for this event were in two categories. Category 1 were the financial institutions hawking 14% mortgages. Some don't even have internet banking. Now imagine trying to sell a 14% mortgage to someone who's paying 3% max? Do you see a disconnect here?

Category 2, the property fellows selling overpriced properties. Why ati coz diasporans are stupid to buy 50x100 in Kiambu at 20 million? We engaged with one asking a simple question, how sure are you that the title deed you have is not in shape of Langata road property. The answer, you can trust us?

Listen, this trust issue has to be dealt with before you get people to start clapping every time some gov't official yaps about plot buying opportunities in Kenya.

One high networth individual we had Faxe with could not stop complaining about how he was conned of property worth millions of dollars. Then he got no help, as in nada, nada from the same people making those godammed high content conferences.

High content is relative and obviously something was lacking in this "content rich" event.

Having said that, I have to say the ambassadors I met in this event were fantastic to engage with. Ambassador Wamoto and Ambassador Ogego gave a few of us a better understanding on what the gov't was trying to do with this event. It was the best 15 minutes for me personally in the whole conference. By the way it was an impromptu chat, not in the conference agenda. But it got us thinking.

Great event but don't go around blaming diasporans for not engaging at the level you wanted. Don't forget that the joke about travel advisories was negated the very next day. How do the diasporans trust the gov't should have been the first agenda. Not property selling companies with their quarter acre tu plots.
Jose: If I make it through this thug life, I'll see you one day. The Lord is the only way to stop the hurt.

@alma, I agree with a lot of what you state here...

I am a diasporan (well... may be most of the time) ...but I must say that may be I should have indicated that those were not my views but those of some reporter of KenyaLondonNews
As much as I agree with some of their content I don't agree with it all.

Some of the fellows who stood up to ask questions, were wanting. May be some of the ones you had a chance to chat with should have been the ones asking questions rather than for example that chap from Ghana.
This means that the organisers had not properly prepared the conference.

Classic example of the dangers of a 'single story'.

The Kenyan Diaspora is just as (if not more) diverse as the Kenyan population. And this diversity cuts across the financial, educational, experience and other divides. There are very well off diasporans and others who essentially live hand to mouth. Some are highly educated and others not. Some running successful businesses or in 'big money' jobs while others have to make do with low paying work. Some send tons of cash to Kenya while others can barely afford to. They cut across the entire spectrum. It is only with this understanding that one can temper expectations on any generic congregation of the Kenyan Diaspora.

If it is general diaspora issues like the ability to vote, that is all well and good. If the goal is more specific such as investment, the onus is on the organizers of such an event to narrow their audience through targeted advertising, respectable entrance fees, appropriate event location, pre-screening etc.
All my friends are heathens, take it slow. Wait for them to ask you who you know. Please don't make any sudden moves.

Yes, targeted! I don't need to attend a conference to figure out where to open a $-denominated account or to be marketed over-valued plots. And yes, the so called diaspora (who named us that anyways!) are varied in all manners - so an open conference ought to address general issues like voting rights or duty exemption on goods when returning to Kenya. Hii ingine ya investment, there is too much conning in many places (incl own relas) I prefer to do due diligence on my own before trusting my little hard earned $$ with anyone. Certainly I will not consider taking a 14% mortgage if I can borrow funds at 5% and buy property for cash...just saying.
First time in history we can save the human race by laying in front of the TV and doing nothing. Let's not screw it up

If you haven't been successful in Diaspora, it's really hard to see you moving to Kenya and being successful. You either have it or you don't.
