Then when there was a shortage of a certain item, you were forced to buy it together with something else...Ati sukari? Hiyo mpaka ununue na tissue. Mkate? Hiyo tunauza na treetop.
I remember this vividly but has never understood the rationale behind it all!
The rationale was/is very simple. It is designed to ensure slow moving goods or goods with a higher profit margin are bought - by force! It is called "Forceful selling"! Rouge Marketing 101.
It still happens even today - lakini chini ya maji! When your mpango (One of them. He he he) orders black ice, Redds, Guarana etc. how many are brought at a time? Why? Some establishments - like K1 can't sell you a single sausage or samosa. Their menus read 3 samosa Kshs. x/=. 3 Sausages Kshs. y/=. What if you just wanted to eat a sausage and/or a samosa as you wait for your ka nyama? Shauri yako. Nunua tatu!
But because of liberalisation, more retail outlets (competition), no shortages etc. such nonsense is rare or done undercover nowadays.
Never count on making a good sale. Have the purchase price be so attractive that even a mediocre sale gives good returns.
