Its interesting you have come around to this view. In the early pages of this thread I was sceptical. Alas I shall enjoy my last laugh Laughing out loudly Laughing out loudly Laughing out loudly
I said it before ..Equity (Technology dinosaur) +
Airtel (Limping company that has outsourced their technology day-to-day management to couldn't-be-bothered IBM) = Bad odds.
The good Doctor should have kept quiet about what he was cooking, now this might not even turn out to be the storm it was predicted, but a slow sizzle that will get bartered and relegated to a small, niche corner.

Equitel mobile money is a fantastic service. On quality and usability it beats Mpesa hands down.

The only problem is that Memba's send money to Mpesa at a higher fee since most people havent registered. This makes money for Mpesa.

There are also very few paybill and Lipa na Equitel outlets. If they can reach a good threshold for outlets & paybills, then Mpesa will start having sleepless nights.

d'oh! This must have lost steam somewhere but the campaign "Lipa na Mpesa" might have been to counter it.

I think Equity are also not keen to promote this project even on the normal sim.

These are some of the fads driven by the CEOs at times when they have a dream only to realise later it was just that.

Think of the many times you see CEOs in the news signing partnerships that end nowhere. Let me not mention any Companies for fear of being biased but I am sure the examples are numerous

May the marketing gurus can tell us what these announcement go to serve

A case of underlings who are too afraid to tell Daktari "its impractical", "its technically impossible", "its not feasible"? I think so.
There are too many cases of senior leaders who will not hear NOs, and they lash out with volcanic fury at those saying it, dismissing them as stumbling blocks or negative or not seeing the big picture. Slick salesmen will sell you air, nothing is "impossible" to them and after you sign the dotted line, they move on to snare another unsuspecting businessman. The techies then crawl out of the woodwork and tell you a whole raft of things which are plain wishful thinking, but then its too late, you have paid and are tryinf to nurse a broken technology into a successful product.
Its important to listen to your own dull-sounding techies and evaluate their advice and not level them like an elephant to grass. They usually can see through polished salesmen's bullshit.
I will leave you now with this short, insightful and hilarious video:

Even the crowds are no more at the sim card registration counters.Highly unlikely they will kill it at the moment its just to wait and see what the next step will be

Seriously disappointed. Over the holidays I couldn't buy fuel with Equitel, couldn't buy groceries with Equitel. Had to send cash to mpesa then pay via lipa na mpesa.

Very very sloppy.

Kenyans love a bargain. They embraced Equity when the likes of Barclays were closing branches and insisting on 20K (or was 50K?) minimum balance, made the bank a roaring success.
There was genuine interest to take up the sim and thin sim. Equity has just very badly screwed this up, its not loyalty to the green giant that is to blame here.
Bright side: Some relief came to Mpesa customers.

A flip side: Other banks already felt threatened, Safaricom felt threatened. That would have removed stumbling blocks to collaboration just so as to counter Equity running away with everybody's lunch. A meaner, deeper, more integrated, harder to best Mpesa beast would have emerged. It would have been fascinating to watch.

The site will not help to know the actual value considering the splits, rights issues, bonus shares etc.

CDSC or your broker should help. If not, Equity's registrars
