Transport authority suspends 243 matatus over harassment of women
FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 28, 2014 - 00:00 –
ALL vehicles operating under Nazigi sacco have been suspended after a woman was stripped and molested in one of the sacco's Githurai buses.
National Transport and Safety Authority Director general Francis Meja said the traffic boss has been instructed to impound any vehicle belonging to the sacco found operating.
"We investigated and found an assault took place in a PSV under Nazigi, which is a duly registered sacco," he said.
All 243 vehicles operating the Githurai-Nairobi route have been suspended and are required to present all their vehicles to the authority for inspection within 14 days, he said.
Meja said the authority has received increasing reports of women being stripped naked by suspected public service vehicle conductors and drivers over the last two weeks.
"We hope that these actions will serve as a warning to all PSVs operators and their employees that harassment of women and other passengers as a whole will not be tolerated by NTSA," he said.
He said stripping violates the code of conduct expected of PSVs.

applications for the vehicles they currently have in their
possession on or before 31st December 2014.
8. From 1st January 2015, each Sacco or Company shall
only be allowed to increase its fleet of low capacity public
service vehicles by 10%.

Thanks for the attached guidelines. I missed on the daily newspapers. Regarding clause no. (4), does it mean that those vehicles which are more than 10yrs old and have been operating will cease to operate?? I need feedback onm this guys.

I think this rule locks out those vans imported during the 14 seater ban and are now more than 10 yr old since registration. Already registered will continue operating.

Happy new year everyone. I'm thinking of getting into the matatu business by joining a sacco like 2NK, Mololine, Northrift....etc. I have a fulltime job with little time to make follow-up. Anyone here would recommend a reliable sacco and one that has favourable terms and conditions? Please share.

Please elaborate what you mean by follow up. I have heard sob stories from North Rift and 2NK. I know someone with a vehicle at Mololine who joined last year and he is doing fine. Not sure if their management works for real or he is just lucky he got a trustworthy driver. Above all, do your own research. Nobody can advise you on the best sacco to join.
