The first owner can confirm the authenticity of mileage using jevic (this replaced JAAI?), but it appears a second car owner in the country has absolutely no way of confirming the real mileage when he buys from this first owner after say 2 yrs?

I thought cars are computerised and any changes in odometer reading would be logged? Am told a friend of a friend purchased a Subaru Impreza but on checking the car's computer it showed that that was the car's 3RD ENGINE, owner explained the other 2 had knocked. Is this really possible? Can car's onboard comp. therefore not store such details? Or is it that people are not aware how to access such info. Over to you car diagnostics guys, shed more light.

I keep arguing with guys about mileage - anything less than 50k should be further queried - and even 50k is pretty low for a genuine 7-8 year old car used in these countries where they have far better and expansive roads than us.

Guys, all this leads to the critical question: what is the economic life of a car? A lorry? A trailer? What mileage will indicate this vehicle has really seen the best of its life and has 2-3 yrs max left? What is this pyschological mileage benchmark? Or how many years after its YOM should u know its life is up? Life expectancy ya gari?

I have heard people say for a saloon car its abt 13 yrs, lorry even 18 yrs but lets hear diff perspectives plse.

I think it's based on how well the vehicle has been maintained. I've seen cars that are more than 10 years old that perform very well compared to some that are 5 years old.

@IDP Using the eight year rule, it falls within the allowed period.The month is also critical in the sense that it will attract some 65k for every year that is less than 8 years.So in your case assuming the month of manufacture is April and we are in Feb, then prepare at least some 130k in penalties over and above the normal duty.

On whether to buy the car, ave seen some vehicles with a mileage of 130k and over 200k that are well maintained and far much better than one of 80k.Its a subject of conjecture, but my observation is that after some 100k most of the Japanese vehicles have most of the parts replaced and probably you could benefit from this.But I dont rule out luck in most of the imports as even a 50k car can have an engine "knock".
