Car buyers tend to prefer low mileage cars. How does one tell if the mileage is genuine or the car has been 'clocked'?

@pn.. 2008 Hilux double cab D4-D will start at about £9500(Ksh 1.2m) for white one..... rising to £15k (ksh 1.8m) for a good 3.0 with Sat-Nav/DVD

This is the new shape (Sixth generation Hilux) which started production in 2005.

If newly imported ask 4 Jevic inspection certificate or check the Jevic sticker (which should be missing if mileage tampered with)

@KBD - does that mean kama imepigwa rewind, it will fail inspection by JEVIC?

The JEVIC Sticker bears the real mileage of the car on the backside of the sticker. If it is missing then most likely the mileage is tampered with OR if the sticker is held onto the windscreen with a non-transparent tape(To obscure the mileage written on it), then you should be wary. Discovered on my own 2 months after buying that the mileage on the JEVIC sticker showed 67000kms while i bought the car with 39000kms on the digital odometer. Buyers Beware!!

@Mkimwa - in most cases the rewinding is not done @ source where inspection is done but after the car arrives in Mombasa.

You can actually check the mileage of the car at inspection on the JEVIC site, if u have the Jevic sticker serial number, and the Vehicle Identification Number.

Very easy to know in case the car has been tampered with, after JEVIC inspection.

@pn shipping takes 4weeks (transit) ... but allow an extra week for any inspections/delivery etc.

Thanks @ KBD, &1589, Mkimwa....

I sent a Rav4 recently (mileage > +80k) to car dealer/broker in Nairobi who sold it on to a mteja. By the time it got to the end buyer, who I happen to know, it had 'lost' about 50k mls. Now how was I going to tell the deliriously happy buyer that the true mileage of the car was post 80,000? and not 30k as he was made to believe...
... yet he knows that I originally sourced the vehicle.

Soon some of my cars will be coming with a sticker on the windscreen with my Trade Name! If people discover some of these cars are having their mileage tampered with ... where does that put me & my 'self-advertising' Trade name stickers?
