no... I want africa to be a better Africa. Africa will never be any of those places you are talking about? We took on the white man's education did we become Europe? no we became a better Africa! we took on the White man's Medicine did we become Europe? We have adapted his computing.... have we become Europe? We are all about being a better Africa. A better land for our children.

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't a better Africa 'for our children' one where their basic necessities are guaranteed? Food, Cloth and shelter? One where they get a decent education and thereafter opportunities to ply their trades? Where they have access to clean water and good healthy food? One where they are safe and free from corruption and can enjoy a quality life?

Ama what exactly does 'A better Africa mean'? One full of rockets and satellites?

.....In my field I respect the Indians, with technology borrowed from Europe and taken to Asia coz of the cheap labour one thing normally stand out, Chinese copy even mistakes, Indians seek to know why it is that way and even improve the machines!!!!

yani better is subsistence to you? what you describe is exactly what I went through (I appreciate that not everyone did that but most of the people here had food, clothing, shelter, went to fairly good schools and got an opportunity to ply my trade as soon as i cleared school). i had access to clean water and good healthy food. ION those things should be provided by parents. a society that is better is a society where gava does things that individuals cannot do... build roads, do proper research e.t.c. a space program should be in my mind what iHub is to technology... a research hub where minds meet and solve problems. a space program that imports expensive technology is a waste but one that builds its own should be funded. @Mukiri, a gava should be able to skate stairs and chew gum at the same time.

Yenyewe this one we'll just agree to dis-agree.

You see, you are in the 1/3 bracket(had you been in India). Picture a 2/3 poor. So poor that what to you is brushed aside as subsistence, to them it's a dream, a mirage that can only be attainable with some help... help from where? ... Fill in the gaps.

Yes, Gava collectively does what no single man can do eg roads, elec, sanitation, research... but those things serve to enhance basic needs ie By use of the roads food can get to the market, kids can go to schools etc You tell 2/3 % of the population, that is church mouse poor, that you took a rocket somewhere, for them!

the problem is that you see a space program as only being the sending of rockets into space. Read my prior comment on the benefits of a space program. No one has commented on those benefits instead people focus on a "rocket" that is worth 6 billion (2/3 the cost of the BVR devices we imported). the space program in India's case is a billion dollar project a year. hiring lots of scientists to do what they do best - solve problems. the current setup in our country is that our scientists are either teaching in university or working in banks!!

The comfort zone mentality is what plagues us. We think with our stomach, that's why the 'government has to feed us' before erecting a bridge across Likoni. Trouble with thinking with your stomach is that eating is a continuous activity foraging is therefore an hour to hour engagement that leaves little time for any other engagement. And with a full tummy comes breeding...

India's space programme has succeeded at the first attempt where others have failed - by sending an operational mission to Mars.

The Mangalyaan satellite was confirmed to be in orbit shortly after 0800, Indian time. It is, without doubt, a considerable achievement.

This is a mission that has been budgeted at 4.5bn rupees ($74m), which, by Western standards, is staggeringly cheap.

The American Maven orbiter that arrived at the Red Planet on Monday is costing almost 10 times as much.

Back in June, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi even quipped that India's real-life Martian adventure was costing less than the make-believe Hollywood film Gravity.
