Louis' version of events.........from the archives:

WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 22, 2012 - 00:00 -- BY STAR REPORTER FORMER TV anchor Louis Otieno yesterday confirmed that he was a friend of the 26-year-old woman found murdered in her Nairobi flat on February 14, but denied that he killed her or that he was in hiding. Otieno said he was devastated by her death because they had become close although he clarified that he did not have a sexual relationship with Careen Chepchumba Kili. "She started to share stuff with me and I realised she was living in a difficult home. She started talking of having conservative parents and an overly possessive father, wondering when she will get married and what sort of a man would get her father's approval," Louis told the Star before addressing a press conference. "She then started talking of physical and sexual abuse. My heart went out to her as I have been vocal on these things and here was someone suffering at my doorstep," he added. Careen, the daughter of LAP Trust managing trustee Hosea Kili, was found strangled on Valentine's Day morning in her flat at Santonia Court, off Kirichwa Road in Kilimani area. She was an IT engineer with Kenya Power. Initially suicide was suspected until the postmortem found the cause of death was strangulation. Otieno has recorded a statement with Kilimani police and has been recalled to the station three times. On Monday he was taken to the National Spinal Injury Hospital on Lenana Road where blood and fingernail samples were taken for a DNA test. Sitting on a couch at his lawyer Philip Murgor's office, Otieno yesterday narrated how he met Careen about a year ago when he moved into Rose Park apartments in Kilimani. He occupied the ground floor flat while the Kili family lived in the flat above. "She would drop by my apartment and always laughed about me being a bachelor but we were good friends. She would even call my maid to ask if I had eaten or if she could stop by a fast food and buy me chips," Otieno said. He added that Careen's parents did not approve of their friendship and she was several times asked to stop visiting him. Otieno said she once told him, "I have been beaten for being your friend". Another time she allegedly came to his flat with a letter saying it had been drafted by her father. "It read: 'I will not be your friend any more and you will not be my friend'. It had somewhere for her to sign and somewhere for me to sign. Of course I dismissed it," said Otieno. Otieno claimed that Careen once rushed to his house followed by her father wielding a big stick and the mother hysterical. "We had an altercation at the staircase where he accused me or confusing and mesmerising their daughter with my money and fame," Otieno said. "The next day I asked her if there was someone we can talk to, like a friendly aunt, who can intervene. Somebody her father can listen to. She said (Athletics Kenya chairman) Isaiah Kiplagat was a great friend of her father. We went to Kiplagat's house in Karen, we met him and explained to him the problem and he said he will talk to Kili," Otieno said. When Careen went back home, her mother was allegedly upset that she had gone to see Kiplagat. Otieno claimed he also visited Kiplagat and this time he (Kiplagat) was with his wife. "When nothing changed, Careen and I then decided that she had to move out. We scouted for a flat and I helped her move. We had to wait for her father to go to work and then we used my three cars to move," he said. Otieno claimed that Careen sought medical help for her physical and emotional stress at his insistence. He took her to several doctors who diagnosed her with a weak heart. She was found to be diabetic. A psychologist in Westlands area started counselling her. Otieno dismissed claims that she was his girlfriend and lent him money. "This is a girl who was troubled and it would have been taking advantage. She would occasionally run errands for me like paying my hospital bill when I was once admitted but it was my money. She was a kind girl and just wanted to help," he said. "I was not leaving off Careen's money. I was not extorting from her. I bought her a (Volkswagen) Golf and I paid for it in cash," he said. Otieno said he learned of Careen's death through a phone call from Kilimani police station. "I sat with the Kilimani OCPD and DCIO. That is when I wrote my first statement. They said that at the scene the father kept saying Louis knows about this," he recalled. The journalist says he could not visit his flat at Rose Park Apartments because of a hostile atmosphere with the guards. He said he was told people were standing outside his flat pointing at it. "I had my Range Rover and I asked my driver to remove my Mercedes from the compound to where I am staying now," he said without revealing his current abode. Otieno said he was confident the truth would finally come to light. He says the compound that Careen was living in at Santonia Park was very small and no-one can leave without the security guards seeing them. Otieno later told a press conference that several other people, including family members, had been requested to take DNA tests. “I would like to assure the Kenyan public that I am totally innocent and have no doubt that I will be vindicated at the end of the investigations,” he said. Murgor defended Otieno's decision to stay away from the Kili family during this mourning period insisting it was a matter of personal discretion.
