@eboomerang, nice article.

any news on who won the tender? hope it is not a company based in 'jersey'

Thanks!

Lol...I also hope that Jersey is not an imaginary country. I'd never heard of it before the scandals:)

No clue who won the tender either, these stories just disappear in Kenya.

jersey is real - it is one of the Channel islands huko karibu na UK. it's just that people seem to like fabricating things there...

I have never seen a situation where your luggage is weighed by KAA or KRA/Customs for that matter. What i know for sure is that the check-in staff for the company that is flying you will do that since they have to compute the total weight of passengers and luggage on the aeroplane and charge excess fees. On the other hand KAA and Customs guys will inspect for contraband and goods you need to declare in your luggage on landing so there is nothing like paying for weight related issues.

Good article @ eboomerang

Fact this one: You cant combine hand luggage is hand luggage and check in luggage is check in luggage,[/b] you can't blame KAA for any weight issue, that is a fact......KAA only inspects the contents of your bag!!!

'..you cannot combine...' That’s a lie done this a couple of times (including Seoul and Narita), never tried domestic maybe it does not apply in that case, but world over it does

I think somebody is being unfair to JKIA. An airport is not a house or a hotel. It’s just somewhere you pass through. In that respect, it’s about how long it takes for you get through to the plane or to your transport home or your experience while waiting if you are on-transit. On this basis, Abhu Dhabi is a worse airport than JKIA with rubbish food, uncomfortable chairs and last time I was there, it had construction going and very few people speak English which is a nuisance if it’s a hub. Nicely, it takes you like 15 minutes to get through to your plane if you time it properly. Heathrow, even an hour and a half would be good.

these are first world problems -
WHO REALLY CARES? its like people have a choice if you are comming to kenya utapitia JKIA! we do not purport to be Dubai an airport is not a house! Kwanza has anyone used the Benezir Bhutto airport in Islamabad or Kabul International Airport? enda huko ndio ujue bad airports.

@masukuma that reasoning is what ails us. I'm not saying we need to be "first world material" but you cant compare yourself to even worse airports and say at least we are better than the worst. Instead we should look for better ways to improve instead of settling with mediocre. Its like your child is performing horrendously in school and you say atleast he is not as bad as bla bla's child. Wrong mentality.

I still stand by my initial argument. The article is biased, ambiguous and lacks objectivity. The writer is comparing airports without reporting on the mode of classification. In my opinion it would have been best if the writer had indicated why JKIA was selected Vis-à-vis the other airports in relation to air traffic, passengers or cargo. In truth there are far many worse airports than JKIA and it impacts Kenya negatively more than it benefits us to have it classified like that.

Its like saying my child is the worst performing student in comparison with others yet they did not sit for the same exam and not all students sat for it anyway!!

Mohammed Murtallah is one nasty airport.
The place is hot and made worse by the facilities lacking air con systems. The moment you step out of the plane the tunnel is smelly and damp. Corruption is always order of the day.last time i was there i had to part with some money for some airport officials to give me back my passport and yellow fever certificate. It all started with the routine check of travel documents and one of the ladies requested for the documents and i obliged and upon getting them she started been nasty by questioning the authenticity of my yellow fever stamp saying it was not authentic. She passed them over to another rude lady and then she came near and asked YOU HAVE SOME MONEY.I was furious at first but i realised i was on the losing end and gave in after a 30 minutes stand off.

On my way back i tried the duty free and surprised. There are not more than 5 shops.SONY,DAVIVA ,some restaurant serving SNAILS on the menu, and another with perfumes, cigarettes and liquor.

I recently have been doing a lot of flying, and JKIA hands down is a real dump. I also don't think the new terminal will be much better, given the corrupt stupid way things are done in Kenya. Its got max 5 gates from what I saw, all squeezed up. Plain stupidity building a terminal so close to the older ones. Look at T2 in Mumbai and learn something.

Weee Mr Raha. Chumbilee aficionados are busy copy pasting pics of the new terminal as a sign of hard work by the duo.
