Just got back from a long long trip abroad, glad to be back in Kenya!! Just a few observations from my trip:

1. KQ is hands down the WORST flying experience I had. I flew another national carrier, as well as cheapo airlines, but KQ takes the cake! Massive delays, shitty ground and aircraft staff, pathetic meals...

2. Road manners in Kenya really need improving. I drove in another third world country with terrible traffic, and a developed nation. Both countries had drivers with more consideration than us Kenyans. We really need to learn basic manners.

3. Kenyan kienyeji kuku is the TASTIEST chicken I've eaten, ever!! You just cant compare our kuku to kuku overseas...its like the diff between KQ and Emirates...a class apart!

4. Kenya desperately needs a decent PR firm to run this govt's image. Everywhere I went there were so many questions about terrorism, security, bad governance. It really was depressing trying to convince folks we are a good investment option.

5. I finally saw what sycophants here refer to as "Chinese investors". No jokes, those guys have huge money to spend, and buy whole apartment blocks of 100 apartments off plan...They're nothing like the low level guys we get here..

6. Data in Kenya is cheap and easily available. We should be grateful for our mobile data... We can sambaza data, etc etc which isn't available in most countries.

A few more later when jet lag wears off....

I was in Asia & Australasia.

Fish comparisons:

1. Kenyan fish are more user friendly than foreign fish. However, foreign fish come in a wider variety of sizes, shapes, colours, looks etc. Kenyan fish tend to keep to one shape. LOL.

2. Overseas fish require high levels of attention, unlike good ol' kenyan fish, where a few drinks and some soft convo can suffice.

3. Kenyan fish taste better than those GMOs fish. Period. Landings are more pleasant.

Reminds me of what I call 'value system'. Do we as a society have any value system.

@KulaRaha ????? are you suggesting that our security and governance are good and the negative perception outsiders have is caused by bad publicity!!!! Unless we remove our heads from the sand and tackle our problems head-on, we will forever remain a third world country as you must have observed for yourself..

3 weeks ago I landed at JKIA on a sunday Morning. Took a taxi home and from the onset told the guy how disciplined the drivers/traffic is where i had come from..even when you are alone on an intersection and the lights turn red they stop.

SO we drive on and by the time we got to Nyayo Stad/Bunyara Rd Roundabout the Lights went Red. I expected the guy, after my beautiful narration and his hearty responses, would stop.....

I was wrong!!! very.....vrooooom it was.

I leaned back on the seat and shut my beak mpaka home.

Kripp, we are definitely third world, in all senses of the term. However, I feel we are a good investment, and we need new ideas and concepts to help improve. We also need decent PR management, as our reputation is really in the mud out there. Very sad.

To start with,Our news are all about death, murder, fights accidents, dead men resurrecting, mob justice, politicians sleeping with mpangos, others wanting their chopped arms back, illegal brews, immorality, theft vitu mbaya mbaya enough to make you cringe in public..etc
Don't we have positive stuff happening across the country that are of national importance?.
And What kind of journalists are these who go into people's homesteads to bring us negative domestic issues as matters of national attention which we proudly show guests at all our exits and entry points?

We embarass ourselves then cry foul when people complain about us.

yaawn.

@KulaRaha - another problem is that we pay top dollar for very poor quality stuff. E.g. the poorly installed traffic cameras complete with floodlights and the poorly designed Thika "superhighway" which we are very proud of. Even simple things like lane markings and road signs are of very poor quality compared to other countries - all because people must 'eat'.

@kysee, unfortunately the media is simply reporting what is going on as they do not make it up e.g. stealing from accident victims instead of getting help!

For investors issues such as rampant fraud by employees as especially banks will tell you; serious official corruption; and, of course, runaway insecurity to mention but a few are cause for concern. I expect that serious investors (not buccaneers) take seriously reports such as "the ease of doing business" prepared by the World Bank and the frequent travel advisories issued by the US and UK governments. Now, before you dismiss these travel alerts like the sycophant politicians do, keep in mind Edward Snowden's recent revelations that ALL electronic communication in Kenya and other countries is routinely intercepted by the Americans.

I told someone that it's very unfair to compare the west with Africa.
Compare Africa with another African country and you will be at peace.

Ni vile we have ties with the west so comparisons have to be made.

true, that stuff is happening and we can't run away from what our society has become but there many other things that the media can report on about what's happening in this country. visit the online sites for DN and sub-standard and check what the most read or commented stories are - culture check

I agree with you on this one but not on meals, at least they try on meals kusema kweli

Oh yes some kuku here are spongy and very soft unlike kienyenji

I once wrote about fears coming home and was almost lynched, i can imagine you were one of the lynchers. People mistook my fears for a "No ill not come" I guess you were not gone for over an year so you can imagine when one comes home after several years away what you have to compare.

You can add to the list.
-> JKIA , even if its not that new , we could do better
-> Thika high way after the gova spent all those billions in construction, some buggers are busy vandalizing, the site btwn Utalii and Muthaiga has no lights (i hope they repaired) broken rail guards .
->Those who travel in Mats or even personal cars and throw empty packets out of the window.(That is actually one of the reasons of flooding and blocked drainage)

Now this make sense.Let's do justice to ourselves cz truth be told we have 99 decades to go before we can boast of good traffic/drainage.

And knowing that NBO fairs better than KLA we can now compare it with CPT, tuone how bad we fair.
Then go to lagos.. etc
Just don't cross the mediterranean when making traffic comparisons.

One of my most dis-heartening moments was when the JKIA runway comes into view, as you land. You can see the cracks and patch work.

Owning our problems is the first step. As an example, Singapore you get fined for everything, roadside declarations (aka urinating in public); flushing; picket littering; spitting etc Why? When Lee Kuan Yew came in, he realized the Chinese had disgusting manners (they still do elsewhere) and was determined to change this. As a result, even begging is illegal and basic manners are enforced aggressively hence all the fines and floggings.
In other words, he owned his country’s small and big problems. In Kenya, even the president jokes about our stealing!
