@Essie, KNH is a big problem. Ministers for health including the current CS Macharia, Ayang Nyongo, Ngilu etc have tried to reform KNH. Unless they privatise it, there's no hope in a turnaround.

That's why 600 patients are going to India every month for treatment that could otherwise be done locally.

Private hospitals are for the rich. If you are poor you are dead.

Despite the many MTCs, the government isn't employing more healthcare personnel. Hakuna pesa. The current COs, Lab techs, Pharm techs, Nurses do all the work in these understaffed GoK hospitals. County governments have already admitted that they cannot handle healthcare.

Makosa ya Kenya ni kubagua watu na masomo at Form Four level,there is NO upward movement in many professions.
I saw a documentary from India where the lower cadre staff are allowed to train from nurses to something higher or so,since these nurses have been in the theaters with the doctors for so long and that is added experience.
Being a doctor is a calling not a profession!

"Grassroots" denotes dispensaries and health centers. Doctors are usually deployed at the sub-county, county and national levels. However, it is not seldom o I a few clinical officers working in levels 3,4 and 5 hospital basically to plug manpower gaps occurring amongst the physicians

Really? If this person is not a doctor how do they decide which tests to send you for or which specialist to be referred to?

Does Kenya have nurse practitioners and physician assistants ... are these two similar to clinical officers? At the very least, I would accept a test order/diagnosis from and NP or PA and never a nurse unless I have a cold.

**But why do these reporters talk like that?

Nurse practitioners and physician assistants are mere job titles in the west. Their functions are being executed by clinical officers of Kenya. However, clinical officers not recognized outside east Africa.

The Kenyan Nurse is trained along the lines of USA and UK curriculum. Unlike their counterparts, their practice is hampered by outdated legislation, that is skewed in favor of doctors and clinical officers.

It is Ironic that a degree or masters holder in nursing is not allowed to administer paracetamol without a prescription,to a patient, yet the same individual has undergone tutorials in pharmacology.

Medical politics aside, only 20% of the skills of a nurse are ever utilized.
