This is sooo painful! Why shoot down a civilian aircfraft?

Ukrainian Security claims to have intercepted communications between Russian intelligence and the rebels regretting the shooting down of the plane.

Ukraine is not officially a war zone. The airspace where the plane was is not restricted as IATA just confirmed.
