I was humbled watching the CNN documetary series; Revealed. Wangari Maathai is recognised by the world in her quest for enviromental conservation. Its a pitty and very ironical that she has little or no recognition here at home where the impact of enviromental degradation has had devastating impact.

@Jaina, have you read her book Unbowed? If not, then you owe that much.

I also watched the documentary on cnn this morning and I can't help but wonder...
is it a case of a prophet is never revered in their homeland...
Or is it that our male dominated(chauvinistic)political scene have no time to recognize her importance....
Or is it that she is light years ahead of ordinary kenyans & seems to make sense to the developed countries & not kenyans....
Food for thought..

@ spotlight

you've reminded me of Al Gore and the global warming warnings in the early 90s...

The problem with the world is that the intelligent people are full of doubts while the stupid ones are full of confidence

we also remember her comment.....

on our burying habits.....

but what i dont understand is this...

she won close to Kshs. 110 million.....

if she invested a portion of the kitty.....

in a Trust...

the interest by now...

would be enough to reafforest Mau.....

and other dwindling forests....
I'm the real Massey Fergu...... Shut your mouth....

@R Shaft, her prize money for the win is put into good use through Green belt movement. She's now taking a bigger responsibility being co-chair of 100 Million Dollars fund for conservation of Congo Forest. This is a true Kenyan Hero who has very little recognition in my opinion. I think she ought to be honoured and a road or a monument named after her in her honour.

Moi and his Mbuta's in the mau are hypocrates who impoverished the country, yet they are the one's now given ministries to run.,.....read bett.. Were it not for wangari, Uhuru park could not be there, moi had other plans then. He used to call wangari a mad woman.

Wangari Maathai was a true global heroine and a strong role model. I regularly plant trees as a habit I formed from the strong impression I got from reading her ideas and listening to her interviews when I was younger. Today I will buy a special tree to plant in her memory. smile
