Hi all

like someone said in another thread, it takes an outsider to see our own sleeplessnesses that we have and will commit and beyond...has anybody considered the latest community skirmishes in terms of change in rainfal patterns and temperatures?

i am also yet to hear any African leader drawing any relationship between the global warming or climate change monster with the rise in armed conflicts amongst communities which were once living together peacefully...

please see the link below for a case study:

http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/chi-tc-nw-climate-conflict-1127-nov29,0,5953619.story

if this case study is something to go by, then the continent has a disaster or a full scale war in waiting...unless of course the fast vanishing water resource is restored and heavily guarded...

Conflicts have been happening for centuries. Most of africa (especially sub-saharan) does not have a written history thus we can't refer back to the olden days.

We do not know for sure why Great Zimbabwe collapsed but we have read about Shaka Zulu. So conflicts are nothing new.

the link is clearly self-eveident - if global warming reduces water and food resources even as living populations (human, domestic+wild animals)grow exponentially, then there will be conflicts for these scarce resources. At a very basic level, the media has reported cases of baboons and folks fighting for water at wells somewhere in North Eastern.

they say the next wars will be fought over (the scarcity/sharing of water (resources)...and this may well happen on river Nile when all the 5 downstream riparian states go Tz's way and start using L.Victoria waters for irrigation due to drying up of their own rivers/lakes. Then Egypt will declare war on all 5 countries for threatening their lifeline !

@ vitu,

the past conflicts of upto mid 1900s have all been about superiority and other natural resources apart from water...in kenyas case cattle rastling, food, women etc...

but now things are completely different...it is either we share that water so that i don't die of thirst or i take it by force or we die both of us...that is the newest stance for most of the communities mostly in the semi-arid areas...good examples, turkana versus samburus in baragoi areas, pokots versus samburus in paka region, redile versus oromas in north eastern and new entrants maasai versus kalenjin in transmara...and the list will grow bigger and bigger...

hi all,

...by the way on a larger scale, it has been confirmed that kenya is one of the most "water poor" country in the world with an average of 620 cubic metres per person per year...at this point, we have an acute water scarcity in kenya...

Water scarcity is defined as less than 1,000 cu.m of water available per person per year, while water stress means less than 1,500 cu.m of water is available per person per year...

so far in africa, 13 countries have already been documented to be suffering from water scarcity or water stress...

sadly, it was predicted 10 years ago that by 2025, 12 more countries will have entered the list of water stress and scarcity leagues...
