Hi all,

Eldoret town is located in the Rift Valley province and is considered to be the economic hub of north rift...the future economic outlook of this once thriving town looks very bleak as the town wconomy tumbles faster than would have been expected...in the last couple of years several industries and factories have closed down...many investors have relocated to other towns in search of better returns on their investments...the local population do not seem to have the resources and capacity to engage in any meaningful economic activities in the town...most of the remaining businesses are no longer sustainable...the potential investor confidence is at all time lowest and still sliding further...

to get an idea or a glimpse at where i am coming from, you may see the link:

is Eldoret town headed to the list of ghost towns with hardly any or minimal economic activities? what requires to be done to turn things around for Eldoret so that it can recover its former glory?

Eldoret will come back. The town has two thinngs that no one can take away:
1) Location - wait until South Sudan becomes a country after 2011.
2)Rich agricultural land

It has always suffered from poor politics but the lessons of the PEV (with a nudge from Ocampo) will hopefully put an end to all that.

The town has gone through this cycle before, maybe not as pronounced. I remember traveling there after the 92 clashes and it was a ghost town.

eldoret is growing.am here for my holiday.the rent has always been down but look at the pace the education sector is growing.with the establishment of catholic university the upgrading of eldoretpoly and several collages coming up along kisumu road an investment in hostel flats and you wont be wrong.but the traffic jams are becoming too much its time to expand the roads.

You may be right about effects of PEV.
However, this happened just the other day. Industries such as sawmills, dairy, tannin, and textiles had experienced problems much earlier. The cause is obvious - leadership.

But as we speak, industries such as dairies, maize, wheat, cotton etc are reviving fast. Horticulture is particularly establishing! The other week, Miscrosoft founder, Bill Gates himself was in the region to see very young ambitious farmers.

Real estate is also growing.

@ wakanyugi,

Eldoret will not benefit much through Southern Sudan...if it cannot take the advantage of the next door neighbour Uganda then forget SS...
rich agricultural land is an edge that Eldoret has always slept on deeply...the pev really exposed who the actual diggers and growers were..

@ mwanafunzi,

no growth of education anymore...the majority of the scholars were the alien stock and to get them back is another issue all together.

@ thunderbird,

is moi university peddling drugs to afford an annual collection of 6b? even the most established university (Nairobi) in the midst of larger education thirsty population does not manage a billion.

@ kenmac,

you do not seem to be breathing the kenyan oxygen in the kenyan space...

@ all,

Eldoret town to me seems to be one whose growth is unnatural...many services were forced into it without any regard to the population that they were meant to serve...e.g putting up a ksh 4 billion airport which is incapable of operating at 10% of its intended capacity does not make sense...a CBK and a multimillion oil pumping and storage were not necessary while kisumu (which has more potential) which is just about 100km required an upgrade on these services to serve the region...

i believe the agriculture based economy in Eldoret could propell the town's growth.

went to uni there almost 2 decades ago. It was a bustling thriving town. Hope it does not become a ghost town.
