You must realize that this thing makes zombies of people. Imagine a child, the only school you go to, preaches it. Day in day out, the household you live, lives it. You grow chanting 5 times a day. There is no room to think, no room to escape. Everyone is watching. Those around you are constantly shoving it to you.
By the time you are a teen, you are a conditioned. Teenage is a period for retrospection. Where you ask hard questions, question everything. This is where they use threats. You are held at financial ransom. Any rebellion is met with crazy punishment, sometimes even death. By the time one is in his/her 20s you realize you are imprisoned and there is no getting out. To get out you'd have to escape to foreign lands, and become someone else. Leave everything behind.
Later on, the fight in you dies. If you can't beat them, join them. You become as crazy as those around you, if only to quell any doubt, that whatever you are doing is absurd.
And the cycle continues. The beast feeds itself. Thank your luck, if you were not born into the madness.
