Later, a group of youths, who had attended the funeral of one of Sonko's drivers, stormed the hotel, shouting. Sonko said that he had offered to buy dinner for the group.

Malombe and another manager - Raheem Pirbhai - said that the noisy youths then stormed the bandas and looted food, beer and other drinks. Some of them stormed the banda where Shebesh was hosting her group, forcing her to flee.

“They splashed her with ketchup and drinks,” Malombe said, demonstrating how the youths did it.

It was then that shots were fired in the air to scare away the crowd. There are bullet holes in one of the bandas. Malombe later pleaded with Sonko to calm the crowd.

“They were more than 500 people and very rowdy,” Malombe said, noting that some of the the group carted away chairs and broke quite a number of them.
