CAMBRIDGE, MA – Two MIT students have raised half a million dollars for a project to distribute $100 in bitcoin to every undergraduate student at MIT this fall...

Quote:
Through the MIT Bitcoin Project, Rubin and Elitzer aim to help MIT continue its long tradition as the preeminent educational institution at the forefront of emerging technologies, and establish MIT as a global hub where Bitcoin-related research, ideas, and ventures are studied, discussed, and developed. The bulk of funding for the project is being provided by MIT alumni with significant additional support from within the Bitcoin community. The total of over $500,000 already pledged will cover the distribution of bitcoin to all 4,528 undergraduates, as well as infrastructure and informational activities related to the initiative.

Quote:
“Giving students access to cryptocurrencies is analogous to providing them with internet access at the dawn of the internet era,” said Rubin. When the distribution happens this fall, it will make the MIT campus the first place in the world where it will be possible to assume widespread access to Bitcoin.

According to BitcoinDaily, bitcoin is here to stay despite its unsure future as a currency. But they believe it has a huge potential to become one because it has features for it to become a viable currency.

Darkcoin, the Shadowy Cousin of Bitcoin, Is Booming

Quote:
In only a month, the little-known bitcoin alternative known as Darkcoin has rocketed nearly tenfold in value–from around 75 cents a coin to almost seven dollars. Its selling point: Darkcoin offers far greater anonymity than bitcoin, mixing up users’ transactions so that it’s incredibly difficult to trace a payment to a person. And though few have yet to accept that more-anonymous coin for actual goods and services, the promise of Darkcoin’s privacy features seems to have sparked a miniature boom. It’s one of the fastest growing among the wave of cryptocurrencies that’s followed bitcoin’s success, with the total value of its combined coins topping out at nearly $30 million.

Quote:
Darkcoin’s uncanny growth, of course, may also be fueled by speculators who see an opportunity to jump on a hot commodity. And given how wildly it’s appreciated in its short life, there’s no guarantee it won’t crash just as fast.

I'm very skeptical about Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. Has anyone in this forum actually used Bitcoin in a transaction?

Same here. If the Enigma code could be cracked, this Crypto-things will also be cracked. I know some geek will quote 128 bit encryption or even 1024 bit. Forex makes more sense than such.

Shame on you

Please provide more info.

FYI. BItcoin is an open source project. ALL the best minds in the tech field (THE BEST) have had a look at it and say it is solid. Any changes to the code to make it have to be backed by global consensus.

It is a one way hash function. The MOST secure encryption in the world today! Check again.
