Nice
My lessons.

Don't be a monkey
Don't embrace a monkey mentality.
Always Ask questions like 'why'
Substitution without changing the operating environment is a big waste of resources
Don't move with the masses without valid reasons
Challenges (cold water) can make us smart and creative or silly and destructive
There's power in team work-they should have brought down that ladder with bananas on top.

And lastly,I think the above depicts how the west plays with Africans.

the games were played along time ago we are now the 3rd generation enforcers. Beating up people for reasons we really know nothing about - it's societal conditioning.

Nice one! I told you the other day it's good to Verify truth. just because someone says he's sorcerer, don't believe it. Go an verify. We have a mind, use it. Verify what the people are saying. Don't be like the monkeys, joining in the beating without asking why, like some people, when people say yes, they say yes. When they say no, you say no. Don't just follow.

We're told to listen to what people are saying, because in that listening you might learn something. If you're told something which is true and you refuse, that's arrogance.

Question(s).

1. Was it foolish or unreasonable for the monkeys to keep the institution of the climbing of ladders? Or rather, was it important for them to know 'why'?

My opinion is that knowing why in this case would be totally irrelevant. They didn't even know or ask why they were where they were from the very beginning. So asking 'why' in the nth generation is useless. The game had already been validated.

2. What insights are applicable to humans?

Reality is a construction that is easily reified. And more often than not humans make monkeys of themselves.

For example, if we can think the 'west' makes the 'Africans' monkeys then we are monkeys indeed.
