Parents name their kids after things because it sounds cute, but the issue is that the child who gets this name will have to live with it. This child or children will have to live with the scrutiny and even possible rejection from jobs and other opportunities because of their name being hard to spell and even hard to pronounce.

Facts:

-A human being's name is the principal component in her person,
perhaps a piece of her soul,
-an improper name could do damage to any part of the human
conscious or unconscious,
-A strange name can result in people not taking the person
seriously,
-A baby's name can have an impact on self concept and confidence in
later years. The name determines the messages other people send
the child, either verbally or nonverbally. In essence you are your
name!
- It can affect the child's image about his self for the worse or
better
- an improper name can result in a child having difficulties as an
adult in their career.

Some of the names given by the older generation had a purpose. For example, in some communities, they gave you the name of a fierce animal if the child born just before you had died before you were born. This was meant to ward off the spirit of death. I gues it worked as the kids are grown ups now still passing on the name without understanding the purpose.

We need people who can document our cultures so that we can understand ourselves as taught by the African and not the white man.
