CEO Nacada and CEO counterfeit have been interdicted following this incident that has left over 100 people dead. KEBs also under investigation.

Commendable as this is the first or few times severe action has been taken on GoK employees who fail to do their work.

The names of those sacked betrayed them...

You may be surprised looking at the full list of those that failed the country and got the sack.

In any case, I don't care wherever the interdicted persons come from, not only should they be fired, the GoK should go for the individuals in court with all charges possible. Nothing can restore the lives of the 100 Kenyans lost but this action will save lives in future.

@Ecstacy, I stand with you on this one, fukuza everyone who failed to do their jobs.

I am however abit disappointed that Mututho has kept his job, but we will take this small action.

How were the public servants who have been sacked supposed to know that the killer drink "Countryman" which is licensed and being sold in licensed establishments had been contaminated with methanol? Are they (chiefs, DOs, police etc) supposed to visit all bars and take the samples to the lab to test for methanol? It is the manufacturer, who is known, that should be facing the full force of the law plus KeBS for not keeping a close eye on the manufacturers they have licensed.

Union to sue Ole Lenku.

I am happy that the union shares my views. If what killed those people were ILLICIT brews eg changaa and busaa, then sacking the officers would have been ok since they would have failed to control illegal drinks in their areas of jurisdiction.

But in this case the drinks are licensed, the manufacturers are also licensed. Thus it is the licensed manufacturer who should bear responsibility for packaging methanol instead of ethanol, and also KeBS for failing to take samples from manufacturers to monitor the quality of drinks sold in the market by the manufacturers it has licensed.

Otherwise DOs, DCs, chiefs, police, nacada etc may be forced to close all joints in their areas selling alcohol until they test all the alcohol on the shelves for them to give a green light. They would have to close the pubs again when the next batch is delivered until they complete the lab tests. BTW it is the work of Kebs to ascertain quality of products sold by manufacturers, not chiefs, DOs, police etc.

Just attended macakaya (@Washiku help me with the ingrich word heresmile ) for one of the young men who perished in the disaster. From my observations, most of the dead are aged 25-40yrs. Sad sad state of affairs.Sad

I'm told a mass service is planned for either Mon or Tue next week after which families will be free to bury their kin. Post-mortems currently a prerequisite with the state organizing the same.

Talked to a few young men. They tell me in shauri yako (simply shauri to the rest of us), there are two types of alcohol: macore (pronounced mashore) and kathavuria. The former is simply traditionally brewed liquor along the lines of muratina and the rest. The latter is however not brewed, it's simply industrial ethanol. It earned its kathavuria name due to the nature of preparation. Apparently it's brought as neat ethanol which is then put in a sufuria and diluted with water before being sold to clients. (in the local lingo, a sufuria is known as thavuria, with kathavuria being a small sufuria).

One guy who's a recovering alcoholic (having quit about 2yrs back) tells me in its neat state, the drink is so 'potent' that one would not dare take a sip coz 'inachoma'. When I asked some chokoras why they themselves were not affected yet they usually partake, they told me that they took macore, not kathavuria. They seemed conversant with method of 'preparation' of kathavuria too and in previous such episodes, helped identify some of those who had partaken of the kathavuria stuff but were too afraid to walk out of their houses and go to hospital.

What is now not known is why, on this occasion, somebody provided methanol instead of the usual ethanol. Hapo ndipo upekuzi wangu umenifikicha!!

Hehehehehe.... Is "Maombolezi" English enough? Anyway, macakaya is the Kikuyu name for lamentations and down there in the village its used to refer to the prayer sessions the community members hold at the home of a deceased to console the bereaved family.

I find it interesting that now allover-sudden the County commissioners know where the illicit brew dens are. Also note the hospital infrastructure. We are indeed a very poor nation.
