who said it is illegal? chang'aa is actually legal. used to be illegal but the statute that made it illegal was repealed by the current alcoholic etc act. now it is only illegal as with all the other alcoholic beverages if one deals in it without a license.

Meanwhile, a manufacturer, identified as Comrade Investment, was blamed for producing two of the drinks that caused the deaths and its operating licence immediately cancelled.

Health Cabinet Secretary James Macharia said the two brands had up to 100 per cent methanol. Two owners were also arrested.

Sacramento Cane Spirit and Countryman were identified as being behind the deaths in Makueni, Kitui, Murang’a, Kiambu and Embu.

The products are manufactured by M/S Comrade Investments located in Kayole, Nairobi.

Other brands manufactured by the company include Hardyman Brandy, Hardyman Gin, Hardyman Vodka, Georges Vodka, Georges Brandy, Rhyneberg Brandy, Pamoja Brandy and Pamoja Gin.

“The results show high levels of methanol content which in normal circumstances is supposed to be at zero per cent. This is contrary to the provision of Section 5 of the Food, Drugs and Chemical Substance Act,” said Macharia.

After testing some samples of the drinks that have devastated six counties, government scientists discovered that a sample from Makueni, where 16 people have died with 75 still in hospital, was 100 per cent methanol. A sample from the Embu drink was 70 per cent methanol.

CEO Nacada and CEO counterfeit have been interdicted following this incident that has left over 100 people dead. KEBs also under investigation.

Commendable as this is the first or few times severe action has been taken on GoK employees who fail to do their work.

The names of those sacked betrayed them...

You may be surprised looking at the full list of those that failed the country and got the sack.

In any case, I don't care wherever the interdicted persons come from, not only should they be fired, the GoK should go for the individuals in court with all charges possible. Nothing can restore the lives of the 100 Kenyans lost but this action will save lives in future.

@Ecstacy, I stand with you on this one, fukuza everyone who failed to do their jobs.

I am however abit disappointed that Mututho has kept his job, but we will take this small action.

How were the public servants who have been sacked supposed to know that the killer drink "Countryman" which is licensed and being sold in licensed establishments had been contaminated with methanol? Are they (chiefs, DOs, police etc) supposed to visit all bars and take the samples to the lab to test for methanol? It is the manufacturer, who is known, that should be facing the full force of the law plus KeBS for not keeping a close eye on the manufacturers they have licensed.

Union to sue Ole Lenku.
