I am always surprised that there are direct flights from Nigeria to US, South Africa to US, Ethiopia to US, Ghana to US, Senegal to US, Angola to US etc but none from Nairobi to US. Kenya is the only "African power" not having direct flights to the US.

Last I recall, they raised some security concerns at our airports (somalia, alkebab, etc) which we were supposed to fix before being granted the 'privilege'.

I have been to the US several times via Schiphol, Heathrow and Dubai and what I noticed is that the US has immigration officers in these airports who in addition to the host country's officers, the US officers also screen you. They could do the same at Jkia.

Which route is KQ planning to deploy this one?

Paris

Paris? That is odd. Kenyans do that much business with France?
A 737 can do this route. A 767 or 777. Putting the 787 on this is like asking a cardiac surgeon to treat malaria as his everyday job Sad
I thought KQ got this beast to open a nonstop route to North America, give Ethiopian some compe and cut out the necessity of
Linking via Dubai or Europe? That would even make Nairobi the connector to America for subsaharan Africa

737 cant do Paris because it doesn't have enough belly space. 787 can carry more cargo because its light composite material allows it to carry more weight.

@jaggernaut, 787 isn't the most technologically advanced plane, its the most efficient (pound for pound). For the most technologically advanced, angalia A380.

Delta were here and plans to use one of the handling sheds were finalised. I saw IT guys setting their cables stuff etc then boom! they vanished faster than they came.
Reason? the airlines that we have here keep sending their security guys, disguised as passengers every now and then to check out the activities of the sheds and if standards are being adhered to.
Some would even attempt to bribe or break the rules just to see what action can be taken.

It's also not just abt operating. Do they have sufficient cargo/passenger traffic to sustain the route?

US route is very critical as far as cargo is concerned.

Passengers are easy to screen, but those cargo pallets? Airlines have to be 100% sure that Al shabaab hasn't sneaked something in the pack houses.

When it comes to trade, i.e. sending produce to the US, I think Kenya is disadvantaged compared to Brazil, Columbia, Venezuela etc who are closer to the US and thus less freight charges. Kenya should focus on US tourists who may be interested in safaris.

He he... you remind me of a class i took. Anyway, the A380 is compared mostly to the B747-8 and not the B787. Airbus has its answer to B787 which is the A350. The battle of the skies is very very interesting.
All are magnificent planes but the A380 requires larger landing pads so its sales havent been that good.

Read this for the A380 vs B747

And this one between the A350 vs B787

And yes the B737 is a small plane, its the plane Jambojet is flying (KQ retired fleet)

kudos to her Applause

C&P:

Kenya Airways (KQ) has announced a first in the airline industry – that Captain Irene Koki Mutungi was promoted to be the first African Captain on the Boeing B787 Dreamliner. This makes her the first female African Dreamliner Captain.

Captain Mutungi was the first ever and only female pilot at Kenya Airways for about six years and has risen steadily through the ranks. Irene was flying as a First Officer on the 767-300ER, the second largest aircraft in the Kenya Airways fleet after the Boeing B777-300ER, and then became the first female Kenya Airways Captain of a Boeing 767-300ER until she finished her course for type conversion successfully and was elevated to fly in the left hand seat of KQ’s latest acquisition.
