As an owner of a VW Golf, I highly recommend investing in a CAN BUS USB Interface Diagnostic cable for your soon to be VW product.

Most mechanics who deal with OBD2 diagnostics will only be able to read the engine sensors, while with the CAN BUS you will able to interrogate all the sensors in your VW car, including gearbox, fuel pump, airbags, original radio, etc., and even…cough…change the odometer to your preference.

Gearbox: auto transmission oil must be changed at the most every 100k, even though VW still insist the oil will last the lifetime of the car. Cost will set you back about 5k for 4 liters of transmission oil. NEVER EVER USE THE RED ATF OIL FROM PETROL STATIONS. You should only use the yellow one either from the dealer or very reputable dealers.

Is this cable (CAN BUS USB Interface Diagnostic cable) available for toyotas?

And pray,how do you change the ATF? My mechanics have no clue!

Used a guy called DeSouza in Inda who specializes in VW’s. He’s very good with gearboxes. I bought the ATF myself from Impala.

Toyota? Don’t know. Never owned Japanese. Maybe google?

I bought the usb thingy to at least diagnose what’s wrong with the car and have a rough idea on what needs to be done. For example, one time the engine light came on and at the same time I noticed the engine fans running at high speed. I plugged my laptop in and found it was a failed temperature sensor which I replaced myself (clip-on), then I reset the engine ecu. Total time taken to change the sensor after googling the error code and location, the specs, and buying it from Impala: ~4 minutes. The program I use is “Ross-Tech VCDS”. Note that this program won’t accept most China usb knockoffs.

I bought mine overseas. Cost me 59 EURO's.

The Amazon link shows the Chinese ELM's, typical knockoff's which will most prbably not work with the software. I do carry a Chinese bluetooth ELM in the car which I use with my Android phone to read engine ECU parameters using Torque Pro eg. temperature sensors etc. Works very fine.

@Ash,
Very informative on Euro cars always and thanks!....Does the oil change,type and installing a CAN BUS also apply to the "Golf"?

Yes. The CAN BUS fits the OBD2 socket of the Golf's, just like mine (2.0 FSI MK5). As I mentioned, for engine ECU parameters on VW cars, a standard bluetooth or USB OBD2 (even the Chinese ones) will work and there are many programs available online, most free I think. For all other ECU's VW stuffs in the cars, you'll need a CAN BUS one.

For auto gearbox oil change, I got the ATF from Impala. After changing it and the filter, gear shifts are buttery smooth.
