The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) arrested the two warrant officers after the alleged assault on Nigerian national Clement Emekensha in the Cape Town CBD on 7 March.
IPID national spokesman Moses Dlamini said that IPID started their investigation as soon as they became aware of the video that went viral on social media platforms.
“Investigators were sent to trace witnesses and suspects. After statements were obtained from witnesses, the suspects were arrested,” said Dlamini.
According to Dlamini the pair have appeared on a charge of assault but further charges may be added pending the outcome of the investigation.
On Friday Colonel Tembinkosi Kinana said that the two men from Cape Town central police station had been suspended indefinitely.
The two suspects were caught stripping a man of his clothes and repeatedly hitting and kicking him. A woman who was at work at the time, caught the incident on video and uploaded it onto Facebook, where the video went viral.
“The IPID wishes to thank members of the community for filming this incident and ensuring that it comes out. The arrest would not have happened without the vigilance of the public,” said Dlamini.
