A man who sued his parents on allegations that they physically tortured him for changing his faith has been described as lazy and a liar. Mr Anthony Kariuki Mathia, alias McKnight, 30, sued his parents John Peter Mathia Kariuki and Esther Mwikali Kimeu Kariuki for allegedly subjecting him to physical abuse for 18 years. He wants them to compensate him with Sh1 million. However, Mr Kariuki through lawyer Wokabi Mathenge, Thursday turned the heat on his son, saying, he was a lazy person and a liar who expected his parents and siblings to fend for him. Mr Kariuki said they had done the best for their son, the firstborn, and he was not aware of any torture. “We educated our son to university level from our meagre earnings, and we have not shown any preference, affection or more love to his siblings, who also went through the same education as him,” Mr Kariuki said. He told the court that he realised his son had a problem in 2010 and sought the help of a counsellor and church pastors, but Mr Mathia was defiant, unwilling to listen and blamed his parents for his misfortunes. “I have continued counselling him, but he doesn’t listen. He blames us for his failure to get a job and live the good life he had anticipated. He cannot blame his predicament on me since he does not want to work and spends his time glued on the computer without doing anything,” Mr Kariuki said. He accused his son of having difficult interpersonal relations with everyone, including his siblings, who he sees as enemies, and demanded he proves witchcraft claims against his parents. “We did not even ask him to leave the family home, but he voluntarily did so only to turn and demand that I allocate him part of my land and issue him with the title deed, which I was not in a position to do,” Mr Kariuki said. He asked the court to dismiss his son’s petition, saying, it is unmerited, misconceived and fails to disclose any violations against him. Mr Mathia went to court last month, claiming his parents tortured him for over 18 years from the time he changed his faith in 1995 when he was 12. “At the age of 12 in 1995, I became a born again Christian, and later underwent water baptism. That is when I started being exposed to excessive domestic labour and corporal punishment,” he said. He said he was born Anthony Kariuki, but adopted the name McKnight in 2012 in line with his faith. He said the name meant a “warrior who fights for the poor, weak, defenceless and general welfare of society”. He wants the court to order the Director of Public Prosecutions, the Criminal Investigations Department and the National Intelligence Service to investigate the torture claims. He also wants a court order for the disclosure of his parents’ biological, financial and phone records. The hearing continues.If Obiero did it, Who Am I?
