SCOM will beat the crap out of them...I think with the advance of mobile money... its easy for a telco to turn into a bank than a bank turn into a telco...Econet of Zim is doing that I think...this counter is a definite SELL.

memba has returned to underdog mode...Safcom have stagnated innovationwise....game changer

Ekwity’s biggest rival is mpesa and it’s great the bank is looking to go offensive rather than trying to defend its territory. My understanding is that the capital outlay will not be in bricks and metal i.e. building another yu et al, but will focus on leveraging the yu airtel capacity.
On the other hand, JM’s soft underbelly seems to be non-banking activities, IB failed as so house the cross-sell of HFCK’s mortgages and Britam’s insurance products.

You see the current previous arrangement (such as Mkesho) means the bank does all the donkey work and Safaricom makes money simply by sitting hapo waiyaki way. This will change if they control the whole pipe and its cash

Exactly!!! And the bank(s) bear all (most of) the risk! Safaricom just provides the platform and the customers. and they actually end up getting more customers because of the new product(s).

I think i read the same article and the head of mobile banking at Equity said whoever has the platform controls the system

How about if Equity acquired HF fully, bought Dyer and Blair and Britam (old money) and became the next JP Morgan. i believe they have the capital outlay instead of trying this which could eventually fail.

HP is not cheap but a share-swap would make sense. Equity owns a broker [former Thuo] so why make Jimnah even richer by buying his license? As for Britam, it was a wonderful buy at 9 not at 18.

These things are not mutually exclusive. Equity can do 3 or 4 things at a go. It's not like Equity is run by one person. There can and will be dedicated teams for every distinct business area. The telco will not be run by bankers and vice versa. I can bet they will be different cost centers. A wise man once said "If you afraid of loosing sight of the shore, you will never discover new lands.".

Evidently a good number of Wazuans will never discover new lands!
Never count on making a good sale. Have the purchase price be so attractive that even a mediocre sale gives good returns.
