Yes @ McReggae!! We should...How else are we going to nurture our own entertainers if we do not give them support!
You see @McR I knew the original Nyengese way back in 1980 when he used to perform at Machakos Country bus station all alone. At the time, he was going by the name Helen in his performances and until he talked, you could hardly tell whether he was a man (completely disguised through his female performance attire).
Two years later he recruited some two comedians whom he personally trained. They parted ways almost an year and a half later...one of the guys went to perform at the former Jack & Jill super market location and the other went to outside odeon cinema. Months later the J & J fellow disappeared, and the Odeon guy akakula weed sana and could not pull a crowed enough to sustain his solo shows. A couple of years later he disappeared too, leaving nyengese still performing.
Up and until mid 90s Nyengese had made a very big difference in his performances in terms of real entertainment. The substance of his theatrics may have been rather shallow, but he made use of his mouth very well and that is when the Nairobi community started recognising and appreciating his "outstanding talent" and all of a sudden, the musicians wanted him. It was also during this period that other talented fellows started to come out and rise to the comedian occasion.
To cut a long story short, Nyengese inspired many people and most of todays comedians owe their motivation to him (ask akina ojwang and mama Kayai of vitimbi and the original vioja mahakamani characters).
It took Nyengese close to 20 years for his work to be recognised. The Nyengese comedians that you hear of nowadays are the former students of the original Nyengese (Helen). Nyengese himself died around 2010 along Thika road near Utalii in a road accident (may God rest his soul in eternal peace).
So, let us give our talented comedians moral and material support because if we don't who else will...There is still a very big room for improvement and I believe the lady comedian will rectify the defects in her comedy shows albeit slowly...she cannot do it all at once..!!!!
@McReggae, Mr Rowan Atkinson, the Mr Bean, is a rich british comedian who used his comedian talents very well. 90% of his comedy shows were full of mediocrity (you can confirm this)... the english community did not shut him off or up but rather encouraged him.
...besides, the presence of a safe alone does not signify that there is money inside...
