Resitting a course or just a unit/subject in a course?
Life is like playing a violin solo in public and learning the instrument as one goes on.

Usually, at 'THE', you join the guys who were behind you and attend the lectures with them as well as sit the same exams. Say for instance you had to resit your second year. What happens is that as your colleagues proceed to third year, you join the incoming second year class (former first years).

That's called repeating the year.

Re-taking is for a course unit.

Repeating an academic year means exactly that. You join the students who were behind you.

Retaking a course unit means that you wait until the next time the course is time-tabled and attend the lectures with the students behind you while still attending your other courses with your classmates.

When I was a lecturer, we had a debate on whether re-taking units is beneficial to the student. The argument being that this is already a weak student and the re-take becomes additional workload.

I left before the issue was resolved.

More important though is that the specific rules vary from one university to the next. So what happens at JKU may be different from what happens at UoN etc.

in UON, you just had to wait for exam time to do the retake exam. it was not mandatory to attend lectures
