They can have different streams for each class e.g.

Std 1 luo
Std 1 okuyo
Std 1 luhya
Std 1 kaleo etc

Back then, I began my schooling in town where the medium of instruction was English & Kiswahili. I still recall the shock when we shifted to a rural place where the medium of instruction was vernacular. And to make it worse, it wasn't even my vernacular. Stress nayo? I literally forced and demanded to go to boarding school at the earliest possible opportunity.

Does the gava carry out studies or research before deciding on policy, if yes they should make them public so we consumers can understand where they are coming from. I hope and pray our reference point is not Tanzania or Rwanda.

I find the Education Cabinet Secretary especially incompetent and extremely backward, in his decision making and even the way he carries himself. PORK looks like a fairly wired guy, where did he get all this clowns he made cabinet secretaries.

The govt was clear that the local language will only be used in areas that are homogenous, while kiswahili will be used for the cosmopolitan areas. Thus areas like deep in Karachuonyo, othaya, kabartojo, nyamira etc, they would use their local languages, but in towns and other cosmopolitan areas they would use kiswahili.

The argument is that kids at that age (nursery to class 3) are best instructed in a language they already know, i.e. their mother tongue. This is per scientific findings. Thus if a kid reports to school on the first day and the only language he or she knows is dholuo, okuyo, tugen, or kamba etc, then you should instruct them in that language as you teach them a new language (english, swahili) which will later be used for instruction. Not caning pupils who can't speak the new language.

Imagine if you went to do your degree in China where the mode of instruction is chinese. You will be most comfortable if you found a professor who can instruct you in your language (english), as you learn chinese.

[quote=kenmac]children understand concepts better in their vernacular languages. Just because English is universal does not make it best for teaching young children.

Those are interesting research papers. I was particularly drawn to this finding:

Moreover, mother tongue-based instruction, as compared to second-language instruction, had stronger effect on the preschoolers’ literacy skills.

@Jagger, English is no longer just the language of the Brits, its a world language, we need to accept and move on. Our mother toungues died the minute Kenya the nation was born, if we don't like English we can talk swa, but trust you me, the kales kiuks, Luhyas Luo's etc languages are dying after our generation. At best they have another 50 years.
